2013 1.0l Ecoboost engine rust. Problem?

Just wondering why they only offered you £80 as a good will gesture, but the other poster (2013Ecoboost ) they paid for the replacement turbo ??

Mine didn't need the turbo replacing as the corrosion was at a very early stage - it only required application of the remedy described in TSB (and the cost for the materials+labour is £80). 2013Ecoboost's turbo was way beyond that option.

After reading on here and checking mine. 2015 Zetec S noticed surface rust appearing, rang my local Ford dealer and explained. Booked in today and has been sorted FOC. Surface rust removed and treated with anti corrosion paint.

Also spotted this rather nice new Fiesta St Line whilst waiting😚

Thanks for that. I've had mine, which looks like this, at a dealer and been told that it's absolutely fine; just a little bit of surface rust and nothing abnormal. Same story with the de-gas hose apparently. I'm going to try another dealer, because I'm obviously pretty worried about potential engine failure by coolant loss while driving. I might mention that TSB number; was wondering if you also have a CRC number or anything which might come in handy for helping explain to a dealer that this is actually quite serious, if they haven't come across it before?

Don't suppose you have any other reference numbers relating to the issue? Mine's not looking good (there are some photos linked just above in this post) but the dealer I took it to said there was nothing wrong with it. Just trying to get as much info as possible for the next dealer I take it to.

@2013Ecoboost Also wondering if you could help with that - do you have any CRC case numbers or anything relating to your turbo swap that I could reference?

It costs £7.49/750ml (obviously you only need a ml, if that!) and is rated to 300°C. It adheres well, dries quite quickly and is fully cured by heat.

I went for the matt black (other colours are available) to blend it into the hoses.

One thing I would say for those considering spray paint is that I would imagine it would be very difficult to spray the rear faces of the pipes as there's very little room around this area. It was hard enough with a brush (but certainly doable though so I'd recommend it).

This is very interesting. May do this on the new pipes to stop any chance of it happening again.

Like other posters here I've also noticed some surface rust on a section of the degas hose. Again just surface rust so far but the clips on the hose look worse. Am I right in thinking there's a later part that is all rubber that could replace it?

Damn... I just joined 20-30 minutes ago and I already see someone with a 66-plate having rust. I'm gonna check mine tomorrow and hope there's nothing there!!! Mine is a 66-plate Fiesta ST-Line 140 with 10k Miles - literal fingers crossed it was with a good batch. I only just got the car 2 weeks ago as well from the dealer! 😓

 

This thread sure was a long read though...

I woudn't worry to much, I don't think its all Fiestas this is mine at 3 years - I just wipe the pipes with an oily rag every timer I check the oil level

I can see rust starting on the lower pipe. I admit it's not bad, what will it be like when 10 years old. I know that's a long time off but it would still be annoying on a 10 yr  old car to have to replace the whole turbo because the pipe was in danger of rusting through (bearing in mind the disaster that occur the moment a coolant leak occurs on these engines)

I  certainly woudn't want one of these at 10 years old - Ford are revising this engine in the new year (adding cylinder deactivation) so perhaps they will address this corrosion issue.

 I had a Mk3 Cortina  with the infamous 2ltr Pinto engine that had a problem with oil feed to the camshaft  - so its not a new problem.

Just checked my october 2014 plate small spot of rust and discolouring around joint, wondering how long

before will become real problem???

Phew. My one looks safe! 10k on the clock and looks immaculate! I live near London though so no sea air or anything.

See the black vertical line on the bottom pipe there? My new clean pipes have that. The previous (corroded) ones didn't.

:O Either these ones have just been recently replaced or they're just new-looking, new-spec pipes! (I sound like a right newbie) I guess time will tell.

Looks like I have the issue. Mines a 2015 1l Ecoboost on 50k miles. I have rang the local dealer. service dept are going to call me back. Quite worried about driving it now. Luckily I have an older 1.25 fiesta which has done 80k and never let me down, so I am going to use that for now.

Wow! You need to get that replaced as a matter of urgency!! Ford will definitely cover the costs with the car still being in warranty (just!). 

I would refrain from driving it at all, and when taking it to the garage drive it at its lowest possible revs.

Guess what? Evans Halshaw Blackburn say that isn’t a warranty issue. I have raised the issue with Ford UK.

Wow i just signed up and saw this.

Is this a problem with Fiesta mk 7 2014 1.2 or just the MK6?

Is it just the ST models with the turbo?

There is no 1.2 Ecoboost either 1lt 3 cyl or 1.25 4 cyl

and its some of the 3 cyl Ecoboosts

lol what a numpty i thought i had an ecoboost no idea what that is except it maybe uses a turbo?

mine is Ford Fiesta 1.25 82 Zetec 5Dr Petrol Hatchback

So i guess i am safe from the rust gremlins

You have made me paranoid though going to get it up on the ramps when the weather clears and check it out now!

My main cars are all old ones - this is my first modern car lol

My main car is an old Rover 820Si - Dont laugh its beautiful and so comfortable - handles like a whale on a skateboard mind you lol
Not used to these fancy computer controlled eco/zetec/superturbofragilistic engines I am used to rebuilding MKI/II Escorts so much less hassle without all these ccu ecu fandangos!

They're wrong. Get Ford UK to contact Evans Halshaw Blackburn and make sure they will cover all costs before going back to EH for the replacement.

I am almost certain Ford UK will realise this is a warranty issue and help your case. Report back here if they do not agree.
