Albert27
Hi guys, While working on the EGR valve yesterday I noticed a lot of oil deposits around the valve/rocker cover. What needs to be done to fix this and what parts would i need? Car is 2008 Focus 1.6 tdci mk 2.5. Thanks!
TomsFocus
Do you mean the small plastic head cover or the metal cam cover? If it's the plastic one, just need a new gasket for a few quid and it's a few bolts iirc. If it's the metal one, everything on top needs to come out to remove it, injectors, fuel pipes, inlet manifold (which will be full of oil/EGR sludge) etc. Then clean up the surfaces and use some liquid instant gasket to reseal it. There is no physical gasket there as far I know. Not worth the hassle to stop a minor oil leak imo.
Albert27
yeah that's the one. The plastic one with the oil cap. Found oil deposits all round that area so think this could be my problem. Best place for the gasket be eBay or ford? I hesitate with eBay because of a poorly made part I've just sent back. Was a bit of a hassle. Thanks again for your help Tom
TomsFocus
eBay, mister-auto, carparts4less, fordpartsuk, etc... Just have to make sure it's the right part (can cross reference by part number on mister auto) and made by a brand you've heard of, elring for example.
Albert27
Did the job today and it was straightforward. In the pic below am I looking at the camshaft and cams? Also curious as to what those holes are with oil in them. Is there a reason for them to retain some oil?
isetta
yes you are looking at the camshaft and cams - well, one of the camshafts, the other one is the other side of the injectors - off the top of the photo. i don't know what the holes full of oil are for. I believe there is a camshaft bearing beneath each one. I am guessing it might be a kind of oil reservoir to feed the bearing below it when you are starting the engine and the oil pump is not pumping oil under full pressure into the bearings directly ode

I did think it might be something like that with the oil.....
TomsFocus
As above that's the camshaft for the exhaust valves. With the oil, I think those bars are just cast into the cam carrier for extra strength and coincidentally catch oil, I don't think there'll be holes underneath them. There should be enough oil left coating the cams when you first start it not to cause damage before the oil pump forces the oil up there.
Johnjenson
Hi i changed my rocker cover was straight forword to , simple undo bolts take off make sure to remove breather pipe first , cleaned area , resit new gasket with alittle oil ribbed over the gasket ( was always told to do that) and ur done, its the same one in the pic u posted , i did notive i had 1 bolt that has snapped and been left in ( from previous owner as i never over tighten bolts ) think it will be ok with just the 1 now in , im thinking of taking it to a garage to get sorted.
