fiesta 2013 gearbox judder

Featured Replies

Can anyone offer advice?

I have a 2013  1.6 auto Fiesta- 2nd hand -i bought it in april 2017- its now done 42500 miles.

Ive seen lots of bits n bobs on various forums about this 'dodgy' gearbox.

Mostly when its warm it judders from 1/2/3 gears at low speed, mainly in traffic and pulling away.

Mentioned it to the place i bought it , who said claim on the AA warranty I took out at the time of purchase- The brokers werent too helpful, as i had to find a garage myself to 'have a look'- They only gave it a small test drive, and the ex ford technician they had said it was a gearbox problem, they couldn't do anything with.

Since then i've  been intouch with a Ford service garage who are going to do a TCM update- but a second Ford garage said their ' area automatic guru' suggests to just ' gun it and let it run through the gears, to clean off the clutch plates'???- this is an auto.- if the update and this ' gunning it' method didnt work- then it would be new clutch parts( aprox some £850, with labor!!!)-

I asked if its covered on an extended warranty Ford have offered( ive read this has gone from 3to 5 years???)- they said no.

Can anyone help- I feel a 3 year old car with low mileage on it shouldnt be getting this problem, and certainly if its known about by Ford they should be looking at repairing???

So a problem has been identified that could require new parts. Take it to a decent garage and claim on the AA warranty, forget the ford warranty that will only apply to new vehicles.

Given the low mileage and age of the vehicle, it suggests it has been underused and this can cause problems with gearboxes / clutches.

I'd get it properly checked out and keep the AA informed of what was happening, that way they can't deny it.

Probably didn't need a second thread for this, give people a chance lol.

It's not a conventional automatic gearbox, it's like the VW DSG box and does have 2 clutches inside.  Clutches won't be covered under Ford warranty as they're wear and tear items, plus as soon as you pass 3 years to the day Ford no longer care anyway.  I don't know if they'll be covered by the AA one so you'd have to check first.

The 3 years to the day bit is not strictly true. If you've had full dealer servicing in those three years they can be a bit flexible if something which would be covered goes just outside of warranty.

Mine did the same. It was a TCM issue. Take it to Ford in the first instance and have them run the TCM diagnostic and update. This is covered under a special extended 5 year warranty. Doesn't matter how many owners the car has had. You might still have clutch plate issues, but getting the TCM diagnosed and updated is your first step in diagnosing the problem.
