2012 Focus Instrument Display Malfunction

Hi everyone,

I started my car the other day and the central display in the main speedo cluster started to malfunction. It started with some lines across the screen, but has now got to the point where the screen is black, and alot of the pixels don't work any more. You can't read the mileage or outside temp, but you can just make out what's in the center of the display. Has anyone else experience this problem, or know of a cheap fix. I called Ford and they quoted over £800 + VAT for a whole new instrument cluster, plus fitting (i stopped listening when I heard the 8).

Thanks in advance

what about one of the instrument cluster repair places. There was one on an episode of wheeler dealers where they repaired a faulty Audi TT display for well below the Audi price. I don’t know any companies but I’m sure google will bring up a few to try.

I have repaired many LCD computer monitors and sometimes this style of fault is cured by reseating the cable (both ends) from the circuit board to the lcd screen inside the computer monitor casing.

This is a pic of what it typically looks like in a computer monitor (the ribbon cable - white in this example- usually pushes in to a socket at each end)

No idea it is is similar in the car lcd display or how easy it would be to get the thing apart

My other half has an intermittent problem with the lighting on the stereo switch. Apparently it is a full dash removal to get to the location.

However, in your case I believe it can be removed by removing the piece of plastic directly under the cluster by unclipping it. There are two screws to undo and a clip.

Not too difficult I think.

Looking at the pictures, unless the screen has been given a bit of a bash it might be a loose connection or a bit of dry solder.

Dealerships don't like to repair things anymore, they just replace parts. Gone are the days of a diagnostic mechanic who can fix things, they are now just a bunch of glorified fitters.
