Is there a particular engine he wants? In general make sure it has full service history and there's no odd noises in a test drive. Taking a diagnostic tool to see a car is something I recommend as it can help look for any faults.

My advice is look at many, buy one, looking is the only way to get to know the cars, settle on one version,  set a budget.

Personally, as I was in the same situation as your son, the 1.2 I find ideal. If you look around, the engine is a really reliable one with very few issues and has another oomph when needed.

Scour auto trader and look for private, there are deals to be had. Also, they seem to be cheaper up North for some reason so may be worth a trek up for the right Car.

Look up MOT history online (free) I’d recommend as that can be a good point for any flags.

From my experience with my sons 1.25 over the last 12 months, but clearly not all cars will have the same issues:

cam belt, if it’s not been changed recently, worth doing.

wheel bearings, seems to have an appetite for them > 75k or so

steering rack, check for leaks around the hoses where they connect to the rack (O/S/F)

funny gearbox/diff noises, had to change it at 90k

ball joints

Engines seem strong though but as said earlier, service history gives a good indication of how it’s been looked after.
