EGR is primarily for NOx, not hydrocarbons. It reduces the cylinder temperature during lean burn conditions where NOx would otherwise be produced in huge quantities. It does this by recirculating exhaust gas which is mostly made up of Nitrogen (inert gas), this Nitrogen simply means there's less space in the cylinder for fresh Oxygen which is the combustible part of air. Unfortunately, due to the way diesel burns there will often be soot in the exhaust which gets recirculated as well. The problem with the latest Euro6 emmision's regs is that the NOx limits are unrealistically low, so the EGR is having to work stupidly hard, several times as hard as it did on the old Euro 3 or even Euro 4 engines. What I don't understand about the emmisions regs is why they're still allowing oil vapour back in the intake, soot on it's own doesn't create the sticky mess you find in the intake, it's caused by soot combined with oil vapour from the breather. This oil obviously gets burnt which adds to the HC's and creates particulates that get stuck in the DPF. It's about time they started fitting proper oil separators or small catch tanks to the breather systems imo. As for DPF regens, the DPF catches particulates and doesn't let any* pass (*in real world conditions its not quite 100% tbf lol). Despite wasting a gallon of diesel, it won't be chucking out particulates during that time, it will be producing far less CO2 than a petrol engine under the same conditions, and because it's revving hard it won't be producing much NOx either. Really the only environmental issue with a static regen is the waste of fossil fuel.6 points

I think priorities are going badly wrong. There is so much talk about NOx and tiny amounts of micro-particulates, and about scrapping this, that and the other, just to replace them with short lived new stuff. But very little being effectively done about the CO2 problem which really will kill millions, maybe billions, if it carries on rising indefinitely. There can be no doubt that ever rising CO2 will eventually render substantial parts of the habitable and useful land on this world, uninhabitable, under water, or almost useless. Then people will have to fight for somewhere to live, and for things to eat and keep warm with. That means war when lots of people start fighting. It is all driven by cities, who think NOX and particulates are big problems. The truth is our cities have never been cleaner, in the "Western" world at least. My parents lived in London with real smogs in the 1950s and before. Then we had petrol cars pumping out lead, CO (monoxide) and unburnt fuel by the ton. Plus trucks, taxis and buses with old diesel engines billowing out huge plumes of black smoke on a regular basis. We have done a good job of cleaning up the most serious problems, removing dirt that did kill and injure, but also it exercised and conditioned our immune systems. As we have removed one threat, allergies and other auto-immune problems have soared to compensate. You could well be right there, there must be huge amounts of dust circulating in those tunnels. Brake dust, crushed ballast, and fibers from clothes and hair of millions of people. It will not settle much with the constantly moving air down there. And a good number of bacterial spores and virus particles with it. Further reduction of NOx & particulates will result in huge wastage of scrapped vehicles, with all the extra CO2 and use of irreplaceable resources that replacing them will cause. Cars are getting too costly to repair, they will just be scrapped when they fail an emissions test. And as for battery cars, full electric or hybrid, who is going to buy a second hand one of those? Once that massive battery pack shows any signs of ageing, it will be the end for it. Second hand value will be almost nil unless it has a fully guaranteed new battery. Recycling may be better than burying rubbish, but it still consumes massive amounts of energy to recycle and then make new stuff again. It is a shame because the motor manufacturers made huge improvements in vehicle lifespan in the 90s. Rust problems were greatly reduced, even eliminated in some cases. All my early cars from the 70s and 80s had gaping rust holes in doors & wings by about 5 years old. Engines and transmissions were lasting far longer too. But now Cats, DPFs, GPFs, fancy over-complicated electronics and ever increasing pointless regulations are taking us back to the bad old days! My Euro 4 Focus, with no DPF, is going very nicely at the moment, better than for years since replacing a few bits. I just hope it continues for some time, as I really don't know what I would want to replace it with!4 points

It is designed as a security feature so only the drivers door unlocks on one press. Maybe you're pressing it too quickly or the fob contact is getting worn so sometimes it's only registering one press. Do you want the security feature as it is or would you rather all doors open by one press? If you want to disable it I think it's hold both lock and unlock down simultaneously for about 4 seconds so that one press of unlock will open all doors.2 points

Help please, I am at my wits' end! My Feista (58 plate) ran fine for over 2 years until I left it stood from Nov-Feb as I had a different runaround and it was supposed to be going back to the finance co. Anyway turns out they don't want it so I went to start it. Battery dead but the car was trying to turn over. Tried to jump start it with old car no luck. Eventually after a few attempts the car was just clicking as they do when battery totally drained. So... got a new battery. Replaced it. Now won't do anything. Doesn't even try. Had RAC out he first said ? starter motor then he said it's forgotten keys. He tried his diagnostics but they won't connect to the car.... so he gave u s the number for a key man... he came, same... diagnostics won't read so he basically said nowt he could do and charged Β£20 and off he went. Another friend of my partners plugged his diagnostics in and nothing. Rung Ford dealership to see if they could help if I somehow found a way to get it there he just said obv without diagnostics it could be a long, costly process. He did say that as the car was trying to start therefore keys recognised before battery change that it was a good sign but I am stuck as no one can do anything with it that has been out but it's my freedom and now it's just sat there useless.... Ford dealer man said try to disconnect battery cables and touch together for 1 min but this hasn't helped? Immobiliser light is doing the rapid flashing thing which they have all said means it doesn't recognise keys but how to fix if it won't let computer read?! Help..... please! :(1 point

green, it was green from at least 2007, the red stuff goes black very quickly (inside 6 months) green should last 2 years of bad driving or 5 years driven well (never hold conventional PAS on full lock, ideally never quite reach the end stops unless stuck in a car park from hell then make it 1/4 second) by a litre from ford, suck out as much as you can from the reservoir, fill it up with fresh green fluid, start the car, move from lock to lock three times, suck out as much as you can from the reservoir, refill, repeat till you have used up the litre. If you are feeling rich buy two litres and you should have the rack, pipes and the reservoir full of fresh green fluid inside 20 minutes no tools (except a cheap disposable syringe) and 800 ml left you may notice the steering is slightly heavier using ford original green fluid over nasty red rubbish.... its about 15 quid a litre, the stuff from comma CHF is better than red, but not quite the right spec1 point

I have the footwell lights @DG97, they are the best Β£20 I've spent on a car imo π aside from that and a steering wheel badge overlay, that's all I have so looking for inspiration tbh1 point

Thanks Clive , its a proper square reg plate , just screwed / stuck onto the wing . At night below his head light will be near impossible to read as well . Also bugs me that if I did it I would be pulled immediately , yet others can seemingly get away with it . How`s your 4 legged friends doing ??1 point

Yeah haha, I could do but I like the thought of a conversion, I've had my car for a year and I just want to do something with it before I move onto something bigger!1 point

@TomsFocus with the amount of mileage I do I don't really add so much pollution to the environment π. Its like this ULEZ thing the government wants to implement in central London this April then expand it to the whole of London in 2021. A lot of people don't have a compliant car and can't afford to get a newer 2015 diesel. Small businesses may get hit the most as they might not be able to change their old diesel vans as it might lose a lot of value or have negative equity. On one news article talking about this I saw some people go against people who are talking against this charge. One woman replied and said this is a reason why me and my work mates get sick during the winter and blow out black snot π. I first thought this woman is a bit thick. There's something called microorganisms which cause you to get sick. Stuff like influenza and the winter vomiting bug (norovirus) and more prevalent during the winter. The black snot thing I've never got that except for going in the underground train which might kind of show public transport isn't always good if you getting black soot getting trapped in your nose.1 point

I had this problem with the 57s but all that I did was put the plug in on the side of the box and since then I have not had a problem with it, shame really sounded better with the plug out but needs must1 point

Just to note, that the ford breakdown cover is full relay which is not cheap, so the service cost is not that bad in reality.1 point

As long as the service schedule is followed that is sufficient to maintain the warranty. Parts can be any brand as long as they are suitable / fit for purpose. It would be illegal under anti competition laws for car manufacturers to insist you have to use their own branded parts.1 point

hi @Bannko newbie looking for the sync 2 sat nav upgade details please (not sure if you are still providing this). We have had our kuga a few months strange thing, it was advertised as a titanium sport but when we viewed the car it was a titanium X not a sport but V5 and reg check and DVLA check showed sport. Worked out a deal to buy it at a much reduced price but missing the sport goodies including nav. any help appriciated. thanks1 point

I don't get the whole 'regen' thing π€ It's supposed to help the environment, which I get BUT we've got a couple of trucks at work that require regen every week or so. This involves the truck going through a cycle whereby it sits and revs the guts out of it for 30 minutes! The truck can't move or use the hydraulics when this is occurring so you just have to sit and wait while it burns it's way through a couple of gallons of diesel! Go figure.1 point

Yes. When you press the engine stop button to get out of the car, you can select full or reduced alarm using the steering wheel button I believe. It does ask you on the drive display which you wish to choose. Full guard is the default if you just leave it. Well it is on the St line X.1 point

The egr recirculates up to 20% of waste gasses with the intention of turning more hydrocarbons in to carbons which are less carcinogenic, but some emissions car test on Diesel engines only check the carbon not hydrocarbons which when blanked there's less carbon1 point

Easy fix if key wonβt open bonnet use a small ratchet with 10mm bit from under the car between the radiator and catch remove two bolts and drop the safety plate then the bonnet will lift slightly use a long screwdriver and push the mechanism at the bottom through the grill and the lock will fall out then use a large posy drive screw driver to turn the mechanism through the hole where the key lock was as you would if key lock was in place and bonnet will open if tumblers have gone remove them and replace lock that way youβll still be able to use key as if lock was in place and no one will know that any key will do it unless you tell them1 point

Sometimes, out of pure stubbornness, I refuse let the car bully me into pressing the button... I ignore it until it times out. I know the car hates it when I do that ;-)1 point

No worries. Means that I can update as a year later - No error has been repeated and haven't had my engine go into limp mode since. (And I've done my fair share of abusing that engine with mods) So I can only assume the cheap kitchen-sponge of a filter the previous owner put on, wasn't actually acting as a filter. But thanks for giving more info incase anyone else is suffering.1 point

If you scroll to the settings option on the instrument display, there is an option for the alarm. Either full guard or reduced guard (guessing it's reduced he'd after) Theres also a 'Always ask on exit' option which would be ideal for dog free days.1 point
