  1. A timing light (Oh the good old days........) on a modern electronic ignition Fiesta Econetic should bring up some interesting results............................................. It's the Valve Timing which is out mechanically, nothing to do with the ignition timing, H

  2. As earlier post, very much agree. My point was I don't necessarily feel a given car is less safe just because it has torsion beam, other factors of suspension tune - springs, dampers, bushes - plus the battery of electronic aids nowadays (ESP etc) can all make a difference. Have driven plenty of cars (usually German "premium" brands) where the theoretical advantage of multi-link has been squandered by poor application. And in many classes of car you can't get to choose anyway . The only supermini for example that I know with multi link is the MINI, and I've never felt the ride/handling on that to be anywhere as good as the Fiesta, for instance. Anyway, I'm just off on a cruise (to please the Mrs!) so probably won't be lurking on here for a week or so as internet tends to be unreliable. Hope the ship has the nautical equivalent of multi link so I don't get seasick!😀

  3. New heating up and running 😀 What a difference, can get a room up to temperature in quite a short time, hardly know they're on. Just need to figure out what times we want them to come on, just now we're turning them on and off manually but come winter I would prefer it if, especially in the morning, the rooms we use are a bit warmer. We'll need to keep an eye on electricity usage over the next few weeks and still run the radiators occasionally to keep things ticking over but overall I think we're happy we went ahead with it.

  4. Thank you Westville you are quite correct. All I did was take my Key in. He cut it.I then I went to car and checked it opened door and turned ignition on. It did He then put chip in to Key..He then put my key in to a reader then put new key in to the same and that was it.Went and tried the key again ,all perfect. He didnt see the car or even know it was a Fiesta..Hope this all helps some of you Guys.

  5. i;ve had more classic cars than i have modern, i even have a home made stethoscope in the garage for listening to different parts of the engine 😄 the prroblem these days is you plug a computer in to the car to get to most problems, been a while since i did my own cambelt, think y last one was one of my mk3 golfs right i'm off to go look at some walking sticks and a flat cap 😂

  6. Trying to remember the last time I saw a timing light! It is a bit time consuming to remove the belt covers (inc top engine mount), probably around 30mins on a ramp with garage tools.

  7. Hi @Tdci-Peter, Thanks for this, you are defiantly a knowledgeable guy! Well, I sent the DPF away to the DPF Cleaning Company (www.thedpfcleaningco.co.uk) and they have checked it out. Unfortunately it is not salvageable (see picture below): I had the engine / DPF TerraClean at about 70,000 miles and they seemed to think this is what caused the filter to fail. A new genuine Ford filter was going to cost me around the £700 mark and as the car is fairly old / high mileage I have opted for a new one from the Catman (www.catman.co.uk) for £238.85. I've got a new gasket and retaining nuts coming from Ford so hopefully the part will not be too difficult to fit - I'll let you know how it goes! The DPF comes with 2 years warranty so fingers crossed! Oh, here's a picture of my DPF part number (in case anybody is searching for one for a 2010 Ford Focus in the future): Hopefully I will get it fitted this weekend and then I will see what FORScan has to say! Bye for now, Stophen.

  8. Sounds like a simple fix to a stupid mistake by the supplying dealer. Fingers crossed for you that there will be no more issues.

  9. Hi guys - many thanks for your feedback What a frustrating day! A day's holiday wasted. So my local franchise managed to get me booked into the Sudbury branch tomorrow ( rather than wait for 4 weeks for my nearest one ) - and I waited a few hours for the RAC to turn up. I am so frustrated with myself for not taking a snoop around the engine bay, but he immediately discovered the positive terminal was completely loose - to the point he just lifted it off with his finger. I also noticed that both clips on the air filter were unclipped and the lid loose - whoever serviced this car a couple of months ago ( a Ford main dealer ) must have done it on a Friday afternoon.... Anyhoo - the RAC guy said the loose connection would probably have thrown loads of false codes - he plugged in the reader and there were loads of 'low voltage' and suchlike - the only one that really stuck out was a fuel rail pressure reading - within range but lower that expected or suchlike. To be sure he was happy for me to drive it ( rather than wait for a relay truck ) - he cleared the codes ( emailed them to me first ) and we took it for a spin - no new codes were thrown. I have dropped it off to Ford to take an extra look ( it was bought as an approved Ford and had just been serviced by Ford so the loose stuff is on Ford IMHO ) - I am just glad I didn't get rear-ended on the roundabout today and the family are safe. If there is anything useful to report from the dealership I will post it here Thanks again

  10. @Guinness, did you sell your dog guard ? Just been talked into getting a dog. I live in Edinburgh but due to go to Northampton on 7th October, so passing Leicestershire, if it’s still for sale.

  11. Remembering the Ford's from the mid sixties (known as Dagenham dustbins) has never inspired me to buy one. However, enough time has passed to give it a go, so I've bought a 2009 Focus estate 1.6 diesel. I've only driven it from the sellers to my home (58 miles) so not really a long enough drive to give a good test. The only issues so far is that I can't enter the correct date, it goes from 2000 to 2009 (the car is 2009!) so I'm 10 years behehind the rest of the planet. Also it won't display the outside temperature in centigrade. It has full stamped history up to date so should be good for a while yet. So fingers crossed 😊

  12. Software update needed! (I think) really should be a recall...

  13. The biggest issue I'm having with sync3 at the moment is screen brightness. It can take an age for it to come on, or its Very dim and over a few mins comes to what it should be. Did have the forget usb device for the first time tonight too. Yes the pre-collision is way to sensitive, one of the most heard comments in my car is " I'm not even close " 😄

  14. You should try an Audi, friends A4 BE has been in the garage more times than I remember for electronics since December. You'd expect better for a car that cost the better part of 35k. LED lights failure, MMS glitches and failure, various interior lights flickering, HVAC throwing out hot hair instead of cool (great in the recent weather) and weird timing issues with the engine electrics. Oh and the latest was the dashboard completely blanking out at 70mph. It's a running joke the dealer is his second garage now. All cars have glitches, the more electronics you stuff into a car the greater chance of a failure or 'quirk'.

  15. people forget cars are stuffed full of computers these days, like any software its written by strange people who don't do communication very well and these days all bug testing is done exclusively by the end user.... go and ask them to plug it in and put this week's fixes in place.... caveat expect them to add in nearly as many as they take out.... one day it'll almost be OK. Since birth there have been more than 60 revision to the software available for a 1 series.. No idea how Ford do it, Merc is one module at a time, so they never bother, on beamers they blast the whole car in one hit so everything runs the currently released "approved" disaster but again they never do it

  16. This one has recently been disassembled painted everything and reassembled. Everything is copper slipped on it. New discs and pads, new handbrake cables. Got a Billy bargin again at £80 the dam discs and pads costs almost that [emoji23][emoji23]

  17. The problem with mechanics. Is there are mechanics and fitters. Fitters think they're mechanics cause they can change some breaks and do an easy belt. But run at the sight of anything more than 2 hour job. Mechanics will look at 407 clutch job and go right where do we start to get this right.

  18. Picked up. Will be stripped for all the bits then bin the axle it's self.

  19. Even with the correct tools used, some idiot so called mechanics get it wrong. I've done loads of them Inc fiat variants without issue. Lad at work did 2 and got both wrong with resulting poor running and engine light on. Needless to say he don't work for us anymore.

  21. Last week [emoji23][emoji23]. I've got my hands in all sorts though from early 50s to 2019 stuff. So in regards to this. I have seen this problem before. A fellow "mechanic" I use this term very very loosely here. Done the same job same engine everything. Had a misfire on occasion. Come back in timing was checked. (Again by him) it then got tossed to ford. My company didn't want to deal with it. So unfortunately I have no reasonable outcome. I can only speculate. My thoughts here. The timing may well be in time at the belt. However if it's vvt and the internals have moved this would cause it. Only way you'll know is if there is a tool for the cam directly or on a decent diagnostics with what degree they're firing at with comparative information to look at it.

  22. Part exchange prices are quite depressing. Best thing to do is put your Reg into WeBuyAnyCar. The quote will be pretty much what you will be offered in part-ex. Some of the Car Supermarkets will offer slightly below WBAC, but most dealer valuations will be plus/minus 5%. Unfortunately you get bottom dollar for part ex, and pay top whack on your new car. That's just how it works, unless you want to go through the hassle of selling privately. I've actually just bought a Focus Titanium X (66 plate). Such a rare car, especially in Petrol, Auto, so I didn't worry too much about the price. It's my first Ford (in 30 years of driving), and I think it's absolutely brilliant. Will post up a full review later. Good luck.

  23. This n all. IF it is a maf fault and you haven't just guessed why the light is on. In genral aftermarket mafs are indeed *****. In fact when mine went I opted for a second hand unit. [emoji23]

  26. for somebody who knows how to do it then it should only take a few mins, just a case of using a timing light

  27. So my brake fluid level warning flashes when I'm on a bit of an incline where I park and says service now... Do I need to take the car back to ford or will a normal DOT4 brake fluid work and can I add this myself?

  29. i grew up reading max power magazines as a teen and have all the issues from day one still in my cupboard upstairs, I've never been one to just someone else's tastes as crap, it's their car they think it looks cool and they are happy with it that's fine, but if my kids ever came home with a mod like tights on the lights i'd kick their a**es so hard they would be tasting my shoe leather for a month 😅

  30. the purpose of suspension is to allow the wheel and tyre to follow the road maintaining the correct alignment and contact patch so as to optimise the available grip and stability across all the wheels. if you can feel a difference in ride comfort.... that's coming from the car better managing the task when driving a given car it may well feel "safe enough", but in extreme conditions a well designed sophisticated suspension set up could easily be what allows you to maintain control, and thus be the difference between getting away with it, or a total loss of control

  33. I had a W204 C class for 3 years, 8 years old to 11 years old. Bits wore out on it with age just as frequently as any other car. That said it did have a feel about it that the Focus, as good as car as it is, just doesn't. Could be that it was rear wheel drive which I do like. Being pushed rather than pulled. Long bonnet makes it feel "posh" too. I know I wouldn't pay extra just to have a FWD A class or Audi, or 1 series, as the Focus is a better car.

  34. So today I've been busy spraying, nearly all the covers in the engine bay and also spray tinted the rear lights, so here's a few pics of how she is at the minute More to come soon lol

  35. So a bit more of an update. Had a bit of black smoke. Turns out one of the Injectors had a big lump of carbon stuck at the tip. Literally knocked it off. Re sealed all the injectors when I was there. No more black smoke. Also managed to get an st rear brake setup I grab on Tuesday evening. So maybe Saturday evening I might do the st rear brake upgrade. Can't see it taking to long to be honest.

  36. Due to being called away to other jobs, we didn't get our install finished on Friday and due to other commitments ie Rock Festival weekend 😁 there was no work done yesterday. However it'll hopefully be finished up on Monday 🤞 All units installed, just one to be tidied up, outside unit still to be wired up.

  37. Update here too! I successfully completed my install today, I had to run the cam wire the length of the car and to the back of the Sync3 unit as I had no plug on the wing. All working now [emoji16] Sent from my SM-G950F using Tapatalk

  38. As said already, lightly greased if the hitch doesn't have a built in anti snake device (almost all types of trailer) and as clean and dry as a whistle, not even paint on the ball if it does (most modern caravans).
