Cars have been around for such a long time that you'd think folk would know to get the oil changed once in a while - many don't...5 points
-
Most unlikely in my opinion. The narrower tyre may have a slightly lower rolling resistance but i doubt it would net you another 5mpg and definitely not 15mpg. Most of your energy losses are through aerodynamic drag and braking and affected a lot by your driving style. I think 45mpg overall is pretty good for an Ecoboost Focus anyway. Whoever told you could get 60 mpg in a normal driving mix is pulling your leg.4 points

The whole point of keyless entry is convenience. Having to use a Faraday pouch defeats the purpose of it. Also worth noting that Faraday pouches don't last long, the material breaks down pretty quickly when fobs are being pushed in & pulled out regularly. Solid tin is more effective long term. If people are that bothered about keyless entry though, they can either switch it off, move to a better area or buy a car without it. Really not a massive issue.3 points

Three guys all worked in the same office with the same male boss. Each day, they watched the boss leave work early. One day, the guys decided that, when the boss left, they would leave right behind him. After all, he never called or came back to work, so how would he know they went home early? Harold was thrilled to be home early, he did a little gardening, spent play time with his son, and went to bed early. Eddie was elated to be able to get in a quick workout at the spa before meeting a dinner date. Patrick was happy to get home early and surprise his wife, but when he got to his bedroom, he heard a muffled noise from inside. Slowly and quietly, he cracked open the door and was mortified to see his wife in bed with his boss! Gently he closed the door and crept out of the house. The next day, at their coffee break, Harold and Eddie planned to leave early again, and they asked Patrick if he was going to go with them. “No way!” Patrick exclaimed. "The boss almost caught me yesterday!"2 points

Deflation Detection System It uses the ABS sensors to measure tyre circumference through wheel speed. If pressure drops, the tyre size changes very slightly and become out of sync with the other 3 wheel speeds.2 points

There’s a reason I’m currently driving around in a MK2 and it’s not because I can’t afford a MK4. I don’t even have TPMS which is an example of an extra expense (when something goes wrong/or sensor battery dies) I didn’t need when I passed my test 30 years ago. New cars are getting electronically too complex. In the past you could buy an 10+ year old car as a beater and get cheap motoring (if you bought a good one), but the latest models won’t be so desirable to maintain once they are that age due to all the potential electrical faults.2 points

The upgrade from XP to Windows 7 was like leaping from vinyl to CD! Much as I loved XP, the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) was a regular occurrence. In the 13 years I have been using Windows 7, I have had the BSOD only once! It's like having a petrol car that works perfectly, and you're really happy with it, yet some higher power legislates that it's now obsolete and you need to get a battery one! Actually, I should start a thread on that one 😂2 points

Hence my move to Linux, Chrome runs fine, Evolution for a mail client, can still use my VPN and Ahem borrow music and films, and when i need teams i run it in my browser. Had to order a new charger for my vaio as sadly Linux wont run FORscan, that ive found yet.2 points

You really must stop doing that, the authorities have already spoken to you about it! 🤣2 points

Sounds like to intro to 'Mission Impossible' should you choose this assignment The car will self destruct in 10 years !!! 🤣2 points

I don't think that was a rant at all, your analysis is pretty spot-on (apart from the 1.0L Ecoboom which is designed to go to the scrapper at 100,000 miles or 10 years whichever comes first ).2 points

Or is security actually being massively compromised for the sake of convenience? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-oxfordshire-65696161 There's no way I would ever buy a car with keyless entry.1 point

Scoured the internet, can't find anything else about it apart from it being introduced on some models in early 2015. All the 1.0 Ecoboost engines (up to the later revamp) are so similar it doesn't make sense to me to have two different designs with the same basic casting. Looks like I'll never know. Ecoboost designers have probably done a runner by now 😀1 point

The actual metal work of the front doors are all the same. The specification of the front doors changes with the trim levels.1 point

@unofix thanks most helpful to know that. I certainly have the old style (minus the caps that got chewed up by an over eager tyre fitter) and the set on the car look to be the same design but never came with the thin hardened caps I as far as I know. Any recommendations on where to buy, brands etc. or would eBay etc be fine as long as they are indeed the right style to ensure correct contact to hold on the wheel?1 point

The 'Battery Monitor System' (BMS) monitors all current been drawn from the battery and all charge current flowing in to the battery. It knows the state of charge of the battery when it was parked and can easily calculate how much of the capacity has been used and what the present SOC is. This is why on vehicles equipped with BMS that when charging the car battery you must charge it while the battery is still connected to the car. Also the battery charger positive lead has to be connected to the battery post, but the negative charging lead needs to be connected to the chassis earth point (NOT the battery). This then allows the BMS which is fitted to the negative battery post to monitor the charge and update the known value of the SOC.1 point

The turbo solenoid is a separate part from the turbo itself. If necessary it can easily be replaced with a new or used item. The solenoid itself can be checked for correct operation. There is a lot of info online, including on YouTube, or a garage should be able to quickly check for you. As you mention there are other possibilities but provided it's not a problem with the turbo itself it should be fairly easy and relatively inexpensive to sort out.1 point

Most Mk2.5s have DDS available, just not activated as standard. Only takes a few seconds to activate with ELMConfig, or possibly Forscan nowadays. No extra hardware needed but can be a very useful feature. My Mk2.5 drove poorly on the day I picked it up. Steering was really heavy and didn't handle great - though I just assumed that was the handling of a 'modern' car, compared to the old one I'd been used to. Wasn't until I got fuel & checked tyre pressures a few days later I realised there was a slow puncture. 🤦♂️1 point

Same here. I got rid of the Mk3 Ecoboom last year but I'm hanging on to the Mk2.5 for exactly the same reason.1 point

Most of the mk7.5s are stolen like this, smash the lock so they can unlock the car, open the boot as this won’t trigger the alarm, then plug into the OBD to start the car.1 point

Or more likely the vehicles battery is flat if been sat there 3 months or more. Luckily they are in transport mode so they properly go to sleep.1 point

Pull the switch out and check for power to it with a multi-meter. If it was a non-genuine switch, it's not uncommon for them to break within a few months.1 point

Shall I give out my KwikFit recommendation now? LOL If you get an A/C recharge, and it doesn't work, you get a full refund. Of course you can seek out any other garage that offers the same deal...1 point

I've also stopped using Chrome as my browser as they permanently give out an apocalyptic warning that they no longer support windows 7! There is no simple way to turn the darn warning off. FireFox doesn't care what OS I am running LOL1 point

I'm using a 6 year old Dell (replaced my Sony) which runs windows 7 with 'Classic Shell' installed which makes in almost identical to XP. I'll keep using it as long as it is possible. About 5 years ago I bought a brand new windows 10 tablet, after 6 months i hated it so much I gave it away for free.1 point

Microsoft stinks! Absolutely foul stench of greed and stupidity. Their intentional obsolescence policy is utterly indefensible, based on pure greed. What incompetence it is to keep writing operating systems that can not be upgraded, and force perfectly decent computers to be thrown away because they can not be down graded. I have been forced to use Win10 instead of Win XP, and I hate, hate, hate it. So slow and inefficient, and always doing stuff I don't want it to.1 point

I’ve converted opposed pin red LED’s into offset pin fitment for my brake light bulbs. File one pin off then 2 options, either drill a very small hole then use a small screw from kits used to repair glasses etc (possibly Rolson from Tescos) or make the second pin with some solder Works fine on mine 👍1 point

Yes I sometimes walk around my house with my keys in my pocket, but it's no problem to drop my keys into their Farady cage (Millicano coffee tin by the exterior door. And then I know where they are too! Trouble is , keyless entry is one of the things I love about my otherwise average car.1 point
