Posting in General Chat thread.   11/11/2017

it has been noted that too many Members are posting messages in the General Chat area instead of the correct Forums. Any messages posted in the General Chat area that are not General Chat will be deleted without warning and offenders may recieve warning points if repeated instances are seen from that Member. There are plenty of different Club areas that encompass 99% of Ford related posts, please select and use the correct one. If anyone is not sure of which area to post something then feel free to P/M myself or other Senior Staff for guidance. The Moderating Staff are having to spend far too much time chasing this problem instead of maintaining the other areas of the forum.

  1. Smoking Diesel...

Thansk for the reply jeebowhite, I really am keen to sort this out. I havent changed the cat... I looked up the symptoms and didn't feel mine quite met them. I certainly can still drive the car normally, there may be a slight drop in power but to be honest its happened over a period of time that has meant I can't remember exactly how well it used to perform! I gave the cat a tap and didn't notice any rattle (not sure how hard I need to hit it to hear damage?). I asked my wife to drive behind me and she didn't report a smell - but I hadn't asked her to pay attention for one. Would I be able to smell the suplhurous smell sitting idle if I get behind the car? I think the smoke is black... in the dark I can't say, I just see the lit up cloud behind me. I have always used BP or shell fuel, not the expensive stuff, but still not the cheap supermarket stuff. It only happens on high revs, any gear. I notice it more in the lower gears but I think thats because it is concentrated in one spot and not over several meters. I'm happy to change the cat if thats the issue, but not being sure makes me hesitate to spend the money. Thanks again
  2. Smoking Diesel...

OK well I thought the EGR cleaner ahd done the trick, the first day after it was great... but then it all returned. I have since fully servied the car (last one was 10k ago), replaced the fuel filter, air filter, oil filter and put Castrol Magnatec 5w-40 A1 in it as always. At the same time I gave the EGR another clean wynns clean. With the nights getting dark I am really noticing the smoke now, I accelerated off a round about in 3rd the other night and engulfed the car behind me, highly embrassing. The car idles fine, perfectly on 1k, the average tank full gets me 500 miles before the light comes on (not as good as it used to be). So what could be wrong?? A friend reckons its the injectors, but before I spend some hard earned dosh on replacing them I want to know what else I can do to confirm the diagnosis. PLEASE HELP ME!!!
  3. Smoking Diesel...

The weird air noise turned out to be a loose intercooler hose that some idiot forgot to tighten I'll try the EGR cleaner when it arrives and let you know how it goes
  4. Smoking Diesel...

Just took the car out for a spin and noticed a rustling leaves air kind of sound. I opened the window and it was louder. I dont usually have the radio off so I dont actually know if this noise existed before! I'm going to check that the hoses re tight, but if they are would this possibly indicate that alz was correct and the catalytic converter is gone?
  5. Changing Front Shocks

Thats excellent, thanks guys. If I get round to doing it I will try and document it.
  6. Smoking Diesel...

Thanks H3lly, I have ordered some EGR cleaner and will give it a go. alz - I hadn't considered the cat, good point I'll look into it, but I haven't noticed a major loss in performance that a blocked cat might give however I have noticed a loss in MPG. I took the pipes off today to check for splits but couldn't see any. The pipes were lined with wet black oily crud. Looking at the pipes, I was wondering what direction the egr valve works in... do the exhaust gases flow from the back of the engine to the air intake at the front?? The reason I ask is because the EGR valve would be a bugger to remove if I were to blank it, but it would be easy to block that pipe coming to the front. Thanks guys
  7. Changing Front Shocks

Hi all, I need to change my front shocks, I have googled but turned up no guides on this... is it easy to do? I'm happy to try out most tasks, but don't want to waste hours getting nowhere! Thanks!
  8. Smoking Diesel...

I have seen that EGR video before and was put off after reading the comments on Youtube. Is it safe? has anyone here tried it? Also how can I rule out the injectors? is there an easy way of diagnosing if they are worn? Thanks
  9. Help Needed With 2002 Tdci

It does sound like a sensor fault, but I dont know what sensors the aircon has. It could be a high pressure which is being activated when the temperature increases and therefore the pressure increases
  10. Help Needed With 2002 Tdci

Some checks to carry out before you throw money away on a re-gassing. Lift the bonnet with the engine running (ticking over), and get a friend to press the AC "on" button. You should hear an audible click as the electrical clutch on the AC Compressor engages, followed by a slight dip in revs. Switching the AC off should produce another "click", followed by a slight increase in revs. If the clutch isn't engaging, check 10A (red) Fuse F15. If the fuse is Ok, check relay R11. If Relay R11 is OK, and you can hear, or feel the relay clicking in and out, have a look under the front offside of the engine, and make sure the 2 pin connector to the AC clutch hasn't been damaged, the wires broken, or filled with water. If the clutch is engaging, but the AC is not cooling, a simple way of checking whether the gas system is OK, is, with the engine running, and the AC switched on, carefully, feel the temperature of the two pipes going in and out of the AC compressor, which is located at the front lower offside part of the engine. If the compressor and gas sytem are working, one pipe will be hot, and one will be cold. If they appear to be the same temperature, then there is a probem with the gas side. Obviously, to apease the health & Safety brigade, you have to appreciate the dangers of working on or around the engine, when it is running, including looking underneath! The above info is from work on my Mk1 2.0L Ghia - 2004 reg. My problem was a faulty R11 relay. Source: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=63090
  11. Smoking Diesel...

Hi all, My 02 reg TDDI focus is noticably a lot more smoky than usual. I have noticed people backing off if I'm pushing her up a hill. I know diesels are commonly smoky but its doing my head in. I have serviced the car and for the last 8 tanks or so i ahve used Redex, but its not any better. So.. from what i ahve read, its either the EGR valve or worn injectors. Looking in the area of my EGR valve, I notice a lot of crap deposited, certainly more than anywhere else under the bonnet. is this normal? The second question is with regards to how difficult injector replacement is? Is this the kind of job average joe can do? Thanks
  12. What do you think of having DRLs in the front bumper moulding (as attached)? I think it could be a good location because the moulding can easily be replaced if you don't want them.
  13. Vibration - Update

Well the problem isn't fixed... it is a lot better though and so I think that the wear on the drive shaft joint was in fact a symptom of something else. I have now had tracking checked, all wheels balanced, new tyres all round, new pads and discs, all bushings checked.... am I missing anything!?!? I think that when I had a spin in some diesel a while ago (and was sent sideways into a curb), I damaged something, perhaps the hub?? What else could it be?
  14. Vibration - Update

Hi all, I couldn't find my old post about this, but wanted to leave an update incase it has use to someone else.... I posted on here a while ago about a vibration when driving at about 80mph. The vibration was causing noticable movement in the steering wheel and really was driving me mad. The ford garage in Wrexham took at look and checked all the bushings, rebalanced the front wheels and came back with nothing else. Vibration persisted, not fixed. I jacked the car up and rotated the front offside wheel, when i did this I didn't get a consistent noise, there was instead a periodical noise like something rubbed at a certain point. This made me change the brake pads and discs, but the vibration and rubbing nosie still persisted. I also by now had tried the rear wheels on the front to see if the alloy was perhaps damaged, but this didn't work either. pc Finally, I have taken it to another garage in Wrexham for its MOT, and asked them to take a look. They have come back to me stating that there is play in the inner drive shaft joint, and the bearing sounded a bit noisy. So I have given them the go ahead to repair. Just waiting to see now if this helps at all! If not I really am at a loss as to what is causing it.
  15. Mpg Reduced??

Yes it was a full kit... I had it done at the Fraud garage because I wanted to make sure it was done right. There is another variable, which is that I had two new front dunlop tyres, the old ones were badly worn due to some other issue that I haven't yet sorted. Perhaps the old ones had worn to the point of giving less road friction. Does 490 miles from a full tank to the light sound average for an 02 model, 5 door 95ps diesel engine? (I believe thats the duratorq engine TDDI)
