  1. Hi, firstly I apologise if this is in the wrong forum and/or I sound a complete thicko. I have a 2000 model Ford Focus 1.8 and it's been driving absolutely fine until this morning when suddenly it seemed to struggle in first and second gear and began to sound like a bit growly (think old VW Beetle). A few yards further on I began to smell the distinct smell of burning oil and saw masses of blue smoke coming from my exhaust and also (less) blue smoke coming from under my bonnet but no warning lights were on my dash and although the engine was hotter than normal at that point of my commute, it wasn't overheated. I pulled over and let the car cool down for 15 minutes before driving it to a garage which was luckily only a few yards away and as I got out of the car, he said immediately that he could smell oil and accused me of driving with my oil filler cap off (now I may be blonde, but I'm not that dumb) and he said the engine was "pretty hot" but didn't ask how long I'd had the engine running and spent less than a minute looking into my engine bay and said "I think your head gasket's probably gone" and when I asked for a quote he said "Don't bother, get rid" .......I'm reluctant to do this for a number of reasons, main one being I'm disabled and can't afford another car yet plus this car has been perfect until today and has never given me any issues and it's totally rust-free despite its age. He put water in my coolant (which admittedly is halfway between the two indicator lines and I should have topped it up - stupid me!) and told me not to bother putting coolant in and only use water but it was obvious he didn't want to actually deal with my car ........ I drove it to work which was literally 2 minutes away and left the car for 4 hours - I then checked my coolant bottle (no sludge) and checked my oil (no mayo and oil looks fresh and clean) and the engine sounded smoother although still a bit growly - I drove for 10 minutes with my dad driving behind me and although it didn't judder as much at first and second gear, it did judder at 30mph - not a lot, but enough to shake my hands on the wheel but there wasn't any smoke from the bonnet this time and only a bit from the exhaust which my dad said looked like "normal exhaust fumes" and the smell of oil was nothing like it was this morning. I also checked my temperature gauge and dash lights again and my temperature gauge was registering as normal, the engine was ticking over fine (it only seems to growl and whinge when I'm driving) and again, no warning dash lights. I'd checked the engine bay on Tuesday evening and it was all spotlessly clean and there is now fresh oil down both sides of the central block - not loads but noticeable and the dipstick isn't showing low oil (although like my coolant it's inbetween the notches). To me, this makes me wonder if it's something simpler such as the rocker cover (not sure if that's it's name), or an oil ring etc and not actually the head gasket? Something definitely "went" during the drive this morning but would an oil ring/rocker etc also cause the exhaust to burp blue smoke when it first goes, but then calm to almost nothing once it's cooled? Obviously, I'm now not going to drive the car now it's back home safely until I can get a mechanic to look at it, but that will be a couple of days and I'm hoping some of you lovely lot could maybe let me know what you think? I'm really hoping it's not the head gasket but I'm clueless about this :/ Thanks in advance
  2. Hi, I own a 2000 Reg Fiesta and i'm looking to upgrade the sound system. I've done some reading and it seems this is harder than initially anticipated. Firstly is this possible with the current wiring I have in the speakers? Do I need to change the wiring or increase the power output to the speakers? I am only looking for entry level speakers for the fiesta such as these: https://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/product_m-focal-130as_p-32021.htm but I am also open to suggestion if someone could recommend some. I will only need to upgrade the passenger side and driver side of the front seats as these are the only ones with speakers in them. The fiesta also has speakers by the door handles as well which may need upgrading if possible? If someone could provide some general advise that would be great... is this upgrade possible at a relatively low cost? (max £250 inc speaker price) Thanks.
  3. Hey ! so basically my first car at the age of 22 was the 2000 ford focus ghia with the 130hp 2.0 zetec lump. i had a crash that resulted in my front bumper and crash bar being destroyed and i then proceeded to put on a facelift bumper and mk2 headlights with the crash bar from the mk2 to keep the car roadworthy etc and everything went great ! colour matched the bumper, tinted the fog lights yellow and lowered the car on 35mm Apexi springs with the st170 drop-links on the front and standard shocks all round. i absolutely love the car but the state of the rear bushings meant that the nearside rear wheel was off and the whole rear end crabbed off to the right when rolling anywhere. recently i have written off my beloved "gerty" and have acquired a 2002 mk1.5 1.4 focus CL due to both my crashed being in my first year and the second one bringing two separate claims. i would absolutely love to put my 2.0 engine in the place of this new 1.4 and proceed to lower this second focus on the same springs whil renewing all the bushings underneath as i am desperately infatuated with the way these cars handle when stiff :) the plan is to brace up this three door body with front and rear struts, convert it to run the brakes and wheel hubs from the ghia and transfer some trim along with the clocks and trip computer with the engine. in an ideal world i would have all the central locking brought over as well but i just dont know what is possible at this stage and how much i would be looking to spend. i plan on keeping this car for 2-3 years and driving it with appropriate vigor. so basically.......... can anybody help me pretty please ? :D

  9. I have a Ford Focus 2000 Changed fuse 59 on it and a dinging noise started and the fuse started smoking. I pulled the fuse out, is my car safe enough now the fuse is out? I don't want it blowing up over night or anything. Also is it safe enough to drive it around to the garage in the morning? Please help me, don't know much at all about cars at all :(
  10. Warmed the car for 10 minutes before setting off, everything was working on the dash, put it into reverse and reversed out of the drive into the street and then put the car into first, looked at the dash and everything was dead (the speedometer, rev counter, fuel and temperature gauges and the digital LCD mileometer- the whole lot- dead). Thought I stalled it, but the engine was on..so I bravely drove it back into the drive and took the bus. ;) Don't want to drive in snow and ice with no gauges thanks Has the snow killed it? I hope its a simple fuse.. Help. Please. Watch the YouTube video link in the title (the forum doesn't let me copy and paste the url or link it using the button) Thanks guys
  11. warmed the car up for 10 minutes, like every day...Reversed out of the drive, (everything was fine on start up and when I got into reverse)..so reversed into the street and about to go into first when I noticed that everything on the dash had died. I thought I stalled it, gave it some revs and the engine was on..so I was confused. It was a snowy start today, the colds murdered it..I hope its a cheap fix like a fuse. Help me out guys! :/ p.s. see the YouTube link on the title (wont let me copy and paste on here nor will it let me link it using the button) thanks guys

    Revs Hunting 2000-2500

In need of some help please My ford focus 2003 1.6 zetec SE has developed a problem. Started of last year in the winter when car suddenly woudnt start but after many atemps started eventually. But ever since revs have been hunting between 2000-2500. It also appears to have lost power in that band range. Also fuel consumption higher too as this was confirm when the car was close to failing emissions test as it had high reading. I have since replaced throttlebody and idle control sensor. Also the vacuum hose at the intake with a new one. Dont what to keep replacing stuff. Thats why i need help Btw idle is fine when cold or warm, the problem is band specific

    Sound 2000 Blank Screen

Hi all, I've been having some problems with the radio in my MK4 escort lately, I believe it's a sound 2000 model from 1990 or so. A previous owner decided to cut the original radio connectors off, I soldered them back on and it worked perfectly for about a week. But now I turn the radio on, it lights up but the screen is blank. It gets no radio signal either but it plays cassettes just fine. It doesn't even prompt for a code when it has been disconnected from the car which is something it did before. The same thing also happens with a spare radio of the same model I have lying around which leads me to believe it is something to do with the car itself. I checked all of the connections to the radio and they all seem to be fine. Does anyone have any suggestions to what is wrong or how to fix it? Thanks
