The Ford Fiesta has won three car of the year titles, two of them for the hot new Fiesta ST Top Gear Magazine this week awarded the Fiesta ST its car of the year honour, as well as hot hatch of the year, continuing the success of the previous Fiesta ST which won the same awards in 2013. Parkers also named Fiesta ST its car of the year at the 2019 Parkers New Car Awards – one of three trophies awarded by the buyers’ guide to Fiesta, out of a total of four for the Blue Oval. In its end-of-year awards issue, Top Gear Magazine seized on the completeness of Ford’s £19,495 pocket rocket, produced by the same performance team that delivered Ford’s acclaimed GT supercar. Charlie Turner, BBC Top Gear Magazine editor-in-chief, said: “The Fiesta ST is the best small hatch on sale; quite possibly the best one ever built. I love that Ford spends as much time ensuring its baby Fiesta drives slickly as it does the half-million-pound GT.” Parkers.co.uk judged Fiesta ST best car for thrill seekers and went on to crown the 200PS hatch its overall car of the year. “The Ford Fiesta ST is a clear and obvious winner because of its brilliant performance, fabulous dynamics, and killer good looks”, said Parkers editor Keith Adams. “Ford proved the most successful carmaker in the 2019 Parkers New Car Awards, with an impressive and well-deserved haul.” Ford’s third gong from Parkers was for the previous generation Fiesta – the UK’s best-selling car for eight consecutive years – as its used car of the year. And all-new Ford Focus, also on sale this year, is Parkers’ recommended small family car. The Carbuyer advice site today threw its weight of commendation behind the top-selling Fiesta, honouring both the sporty ST and the rest of the Fiesta line-up. Carbuyer editor-in-chief Steve Fowler said the Fiesta ST as best hot hatch is easy to live with day-to-day, yet comes alive on the right roads, putting far more powerful alternatives in the shade. Carbuyer commended the entire new Fiesta range for its design, technology, cabin space, value for money and fun to drive. “The Ford Fiesta is the standout new car on the market today. Ford manages to cram so much into its supermini-sized package while retaining the trademark handling verve that really sets the Fiesta apart. Quite simply, we love it and it is Carbuyer’s car of the year once again,” said Steve Fowler. Ford has sold more than 2,500 new Fiesta ST models since June 2018, of 120,000 new Fiestas delivered altogether in the last 18 months. Performance Blue is the most popular Fiesta ST colour choice, accounting for more than a quarter of orders. More than 65 per cent of customers have added the optional £850 Performance Pack, which includes a Quaife limited slip differential, launch control and performance shift lights. Almost three-quarters of ST orders are for the three-door bodystyle, and over half of customers have opted for the top ST-3 series.

On busy roads so called ‘phantom’ traffic jams can occur, when, seemingly without reason, traffic comes to a standstill. These frustrating jams are easily caused by human factors – such as merging into traffic without signalling, distracted driving, poor driving habits and reaction times, or unnecessary braking. Once one driver hits the brakes, a chain reaction can occur as other drivers tap their brakes, causing the flow of traffic to grind to a halt. Now, Ford and researchers from Vanderbilt University, a private research university in Tennessee, U.S., have demonstrated that such hold-ups could be minimised with widespread use of technology already offered on Ford vehicles from the Fiesta small car to the Transit van. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) technology can automatically slow down and speed up to keep pace with the car in front without getting fatigued or distracted. “A fun summer holiday family road trip can quickly become irritating when traffic slows to a crawl – especially once you learn there was no reason for the gridlock,” said Torsten Wey, manager, Driver Assistance and Safety Technology, Ford of Europe. “We encourage Ford owners who have Adaptive Cruise Control to use it during their summer travels in the hope this smart technology today can be that first step to help ease commutes.” On a closed Ford test track, 36 drivers simulated normal highway traffic using ACC technology. Those drivers then drove the same course, but without the technology – meaning they had to manually brake and accelerate the vehicle. The results: vehicles using ACC reduced the impact of a braking event more than those vehicles without the activated technology. Even with just one in three vehicles using ACC, the test yielded similar traffic-busting benefits. “For years, traffic researchers and engineers have been looking to smart vehicle technologies to reduce traffic congestion, whether that’s vehicles that talk to each other or vehicles that can predict the road ahead,” said Daniel Work, civil engineering professor at Vanderbilt University. “This demonstration was a unique opportunity to understand how commercially-available active driver-assist technologies can be used to positively influence traffic flow.” Ford currently offers Adaptive Cruise Control on 80 per cent of the company’s passenger and commercial vehicle line-up in Europe, and with the all-new Ford Focus recently introduced an enhanced version of the technology featuring Stop & Go, Speed Sign Recognition and Lane-Centring functionality for effortlessly negotiating stop-start traffic. A previous EU-funded joint research project led from the Ford Research and Innovation Center, Aachen, Germany, concluded that vehicles equipped with ACC and Forward Collision Warning technology could help prevent or mitigate the effects of more than 5 per cent of motorway accidents resulting in injuries; save drivers more than 3 million hours per year stuck in traffic; and reduce passenger car fuel consumption by 3 per cent.

The sequence was filmed in partnership with Castrol Edge during a tight four-hour window, during which all eight Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Team drivers took time-out from a pre-season Ford GT race car tyre test to shoot. Andy Priaulx, Harry Tincknell, Olivier Pla and Stefan Mücke from the World Endurance Championship, and Dirk Müller, Joey Hand, Richard Westbrook and Ryan Briscoe from the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, each took the wheel of a Ford Performance model – setting off at intervals and culminating in an eight-way battle through the final bends and finish straight. The time trial was the first and probably only chance to find out if a Fiesta ST could beat a Le Mans-winning Ford GT race car. The showdown was filmed using three camera crews, a drone and 16 GoPro cameras. Wheel-to-wheel action was captured using a custom-built Ford Fiesta ST camera tracking vehicle in ultra-high-definition 4K resolution. From extra special pickup trucks to Le Mans-winning thoroughbred race cars, Ford Performance vehicles offer unique characters but share sophisticated driving technologies to deliver exceptional fun to drive experiences. All but two of the cars feature Ford’s EcoBoost engines, from the smallest 3‑cylinder 1.5-litre EcoBoost in the all-new Fiesta ST right up to the 3.5-litre twin turbo EcoBoost in the F-150 Raptor, road-going Ford GT and Ford GT race car. The Mustang GT350R features a remarkable flat-plane crank V8 that delivers 526 horsepower from 5.2 litres, while the new Mustang GT features the iconic 5.0-litre V8. Afterwards, Harry Tincknell said: “It was a hilarious shoot. Eight racing drivers all given a car to go flat-out in for a race. Anything could have happened and it almost did! It was amazing to be one of the first people to drive the all-new Ford Fiesta ST, one of the most popular cars in the world, and it handled like a dream. “ Richard Westbrook, who drove the Focus RS said: “It was great to take on our Ford Chip Ganassi Racing teammates at a totally different challenge. It was just a blast. Ford Performance offers vehicles that are so capable at very different things and their strengths showed on the track.” Stefan Mücke said: “Driving the all-new Mustang GT road car on the race track was great fun. It was very special to see all the Ford Performance cars on the track at the same time, and quite brave, too, to do this with a group of competitive racing drivers! It got very close in the final corners as everybody wanted to be first. Great fun and an awesome lap!” Joey Hand said: "Some of the coolest cats out there drive Mustangs and I love horsepower, so I was crossing my fingers I'd get the GT350R. Things got a little wild on the track, but it was a great time. I'd take them on again." Olivier Pla said: “Obviously driving the Ford GT was great around Motorland. You can clearly feel and it is obvious to see how fast this car is. Driving the Ford GT at the limit is very special.
