Ford Ka 1998 Surging At High Speeds

Hi,

I've got a 1998 ford Ka (with an endure engine), at high speeds (normally around 50mph) the engine experienced repeated surging (high revs) happening about once every 2 seconds for around a second at a time. This surging can continue for up to 10 minutes, and continues even if the car is slowed down or sped up (i've tried changing up and down too, but this makes no difference).

Does anyone know a potential cause of this issue? Any help would be great
