Gear Ratios

Featured Replies

Are they the same across petrol and diesel models?

I come from a Skoda diesel-owning background and this Focus petrol I now have sounds like it is only happy at lower speeds - above 60mph it's more like a scream. The Fabia was perfectly happy yet needed third below 30mph whereas the Focus doesn't grumble in fourth at 30mph at all.

Just curious.

I have to be in 3rd at 30mph or it grumbles, I can switch to 4th at 35mph and switch to 5th at 45 and 6th at 60mph at 60mph it sits around 1200rpm 80 mph 2100rpm

Diesel engine revolutions are far less than an equivalent petrol engine's that's for sure.

Not sure a Fabia diesel can be compared to a Focus petrol in terms of engine r.p.m. at any given roadspeed

I find that our 1.8TDCi at 2000rpm is roughly equivalent to our 1.8HE petrol at 3000rpm. A petrol engine produces it's power, and especially it's torque, at higher revs than a diesel.

1.8 tdci has terrible gear ratios in my opinion, however it really needs a 6th gear for the motorway runs. 1st and second are useless in traffic. 1st gear rides at ~5mph and you cant go into second until you hit about 12mph so alot of clutching and jugging about. and its too noisy to stay in 1st <_<

Gear ratios are very different between petrols and diesels.

Gears are for torque multiplication, the torque is lower in diesels, and lower still with a VNT turbo, but also runs out quickly, so the gears end up quite close together to avoid dropping out of the small powerband between gears. In petrols the torque is much higher and the band is wider so you need longer ratios or you'd be changing up just as the power comes on. This does mean that at speed the petrol RPM will be higher BUT the real issue with noise comes from the lack of sound deadening in the Focus, there's loads of it in VAG cars, even the Skodas. My diesel Focus is uncomfortably loud at speed with both engine and road noise, very different to my diesel Golf.
