Mk2 Alternator failed this week on 48K...My old mk1 still had the original on at 95K oh well mustn't build em like they used to ha!!

I think in part it dependS what engine you've got, the diesels have larger, more powerful alternators (in general).

My Denso alternator started to wear out at 115K miles on my 1.8 TDCI, it was still working however put dipped under load.

It all depends on how many hours the engine has been left running, usually the bearings go before the brushes, (shh shh shh shh shh shh shh noise)

Sometimes the brushes dry out and then quit passing current,

If you have an electrician friend, and manage to find new brushes and bearings he/she can usually rebuild it for you at a quarter of the price of a new one,

TBH all the do to recon them is do what i said above

Cheers guys for the replies interestingly I thought I had a gearbox problem because I could here the noise but now it's gone lol so repair bill could of been a lot more,cost £180 fitted,
