'06 1.8 Tdci, Few Issues...

Featured Replies

Hi all, my dads recently bought a 2006 focus 1.8 tdci, 143k on the clock so shes done a fair bit but its a diesel right ;)

Anyway, over the last few mornings its been smoking like heck on startup for a few seconds, and also running like a dog for a few seconds, a fair bit of blue/white smoke, which to me points to bad glow plugs, especially as its not done it before and has only started now its been a little colder of a morning.

I had a drive of it today and went about 10 miles starting from cold, and as my dad had said, it does feel slightly down on power to how it was when he bought it a few months back, not massively, but doesnt quite have the whoosh it used to, there was also a bit of black smoke under load, but im more ruthless than dad is, and a nice little 'Italian tune up' appears to have sorted out the smoke, well, under load in any case, the cold start smoke and rough idle is still present.

Another thing i have also noticed, which could well be connected to it all, is that the temperature gauge hardly moves at all, it barely makes it off the 60 degree mark, i actually thought the gauge was bust until i realised that it had moved a tiny bit.

Im thinking whack a set of new glow plugs in, a new coolant temp senser and whack a bottle of decent injector cleaner down its throat for a start (is forte injector flush still around) and see if that yeilds any positive results, would there be anything else specific to this car that id need to be checking on in addition to the things ive mentioned?

Many thanks in advance :)

Blue smoke emitted from the exhaust is indicative of oil burning in the combustion process & white smoke is either raw, unburnt diesel vapourising on hot exhaust parts or water could be present in the combustion process, or both ( if it is real smoke & not steam - which is the water issue )
