Dashcam hardwire troubleshoot

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I recently purchased a 2013 C-max Energi and I am trying to hardwire a rexing v1 dashcam to the passenger side fuse-box located under the glovebox.

So far I have had very little success after following all the instructions I could find online for doing this.

Here is a quick list of the things I purchased to do this:

Mini add-a-fuse

https://www.amazon.com/Pico-0956PT-Blade-Circuit-Holder/dp/B001QRSBW0/ref=pd_bxgy_107_img_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=A79572W9AQNCSA38DWNF

Hardwire kit

rexing v1 cam

I have my own crimper and mini-fuses.

Heres basically the step-by-step I took to doing this, I have posted a photo album at the end:

1.       Mount the dashcam to the windshield and plugin the MINI USB end to the camera. Run the cable down the upholstery of the car to the fuse box located under the glovebox on the passenger side.

2.       Crimp the red wire of the cable to the mini add-a-fuse piece, and put in a orange/brown 5v fuse into it. Place the add-a-fuse into a not used fuse port in the car (see picture. I tried 63, 64, 89 as well as trying to piggy-back it off 82 – the cigar lighter)

3.       Unscrew one of the 2 bolts I could find on the fuse-box, and hook the black cable end around the bolt, and screw it back in for the ground connection (see the 3 repeating pictures. I tried the black bolt, but noticed plastic underneath, so then tried the non-painted bolt in the picture which is facing the camera on a side-angle)

4.       Turn the car on. Turn the camera on.

The camera still doesn’t receive power after the car is on. And switches off after 10 seconds with a low battery message.

Here is the photo album of what I have done: http://m.imgur.com/a/hNxEn

Anyone have a solution for this or who has done this before on a c-max? I must be crazy..

Maybe the fuse slot you're using is not powered.

Try the rear demister feed fuse instead (if on that board).

Failing that have you checked the hardwire kit is getting power?

May be a bad crimp or insulation between the crimp and wire?

I re-crimped it and re-did the ground wire. Still no result, I don't know how properly the cables have to be touching?

i had a bit of the red exposed wire touch metal and sparks flew, I guess that means there must be power in the cables.. Right?

Should mean so.

Are the wires the right way around according to the polarity on the converter?

Is the converter actually working or have they sent you a duff one?

Plug the usb into an android phone and see if it starts charging.

Have you got a multimeter? You need to prove you have got a ground and also power from the fuse tap. Without knowing that you'll be stabbing in the dark as to what's at fault.
