Hi, stupid question about the boot handle gasket

Hi, so, my boot handle is off my MK2.5 ready for the new one, question is i need to put one of these on to replace the old one, does this stick onto the car itself or does it stick onto the boot handle? thanks

    id stick it on the bonnet but clean it well first
