jeebowhite
OK so, I love insurance renewal time! maybe I am sad... You see, I have been with the same insurers for the last four years, and each time they want to renew my policy, they charge me a lot more, so I like to play the game! For the record, I tend to go for 10 month accelerator policies, as opposed to 12 months. Today I got a letter, renewal was £758! so I jumped on the price comparison websites... Got a best price of £950'ish for a 12 month cover. Phoned up the Owners club insurance who found me an excellent deal of £630 plus all I was getting from my current insurer, but the penalty was a £450 excess (non negotiable!) I phoned up Admiral, and advised them of this better deal (much more different). Told them that I was getting all the bells and whistles with Adrian Flux, but I added in a few that Admiral hadn't yet offered me. So if I took the policy exactly as it was, they would have given me the same price of £630, whilst thats good, it wasnt good enough! So after a bit of talking I got the price to an acceptable £665, for that I got all the stuff I had before, but also got: Key Cover (£1000.00 cover) Lower Excess (£300 instead of £350) Excess will drop by £150 in January on my birthday Current Modification's included. All in all, I saved just over £70 off their renewal price and got a handful of goodies to boot! oh and if I want to add a tuning box, it will only cost me £20, unfortunately the same couldn't be said of Adrian Flux's company as they would have had to add almost £100 Goes to show, look around, and see what you can get! Year five begins...
stevegtuk
mines due on the 15th, i got my renewal of £660 from esure without all the mods on te car. I was intending to decleare most of them as im just asking for trouble if i dont, so i figured it will be a load more than the original quote with esure, so i rang adrian flux. I put in the mods and got a Quot back of £610 with also key cover, lower excess and personal accident, which wasnt covered with esures so i took it striaght away. Yes i could have done more shopping around, but i couldnt be bothered with giving my details every time blah blah blah,,, and with this quote saving me £50 with mods and the extra cover there was no point even bothering. Preee
I never keep the same insurance company for more than a year , i always change as they always put the price up , just by shopping around i manage to get the price lower , if you stay , loyalty seems to be worthless to these insurance companies. Lenny
Aw huh!! Just received a form from my insurance today to fill in ALL Modifications!! I can't remember all of them lol
b1g_dav3
Ask Adrian Flux how much it'd be modified, sometimes you find if you do a small engine mod, you end up with a reduction with them as they specialise in modified vehicles. They used to insure one of my Mini's.
Turvey
I always use a comparison site after I get my renewal from my current provider. I then go back to current insurer and tell them that I'm cancelling for a cheaper policy and 9 times out of 10 they'll match it or get close enough to stay with them. I have also started going through cash-back sites as well which makes the deal even sweeter ;) Typical Scot, short arms, deep pockets :D
b1g_dav3
You can always cancel the policy and take out a new one with the same company, if you're not too peeved that they tried ripping you off for your loyalty, but all do it :P
Dal.
None of the so called "specalists" such as Sky / Adrian Flux / Greenlight could get near my Aviva quote of £360 last year with mods declared. So all in all for a modified Focus ST with circa 280bhp, I think I won :)
jeebowhite
some good success stories. You do have to play the game and play one off the other to get a reasonable quote and reasonable price! My cost is only so high due to my accident a few years back. At least now, next time I renew, it wont have happened in the last three years, should be cheaper still, plus my discount for hitting 25 :D I find that loyalty is only worth something to some insurers, so far though, I have to say challenge Admiral, and they will do all they can to keep you. As of yet, I have no reasons, wishes, or negative experiences really worth leaving them! Cheap quote, cheaper excess, cant complain!
Steve
i always find hat with a lot of online quotes is sometimes the voluntary excess is overlooked. with voluntary excess it will make the quote cheap.. tescos do this. Of course using compare sites the actual second year will always be more expensive as the comparison site makes all the money on year one. year two the insurance companies make up their losses. A percentage stay on purely because of laziness. with Adrian Flux they usually always try and beat any price i find. members should always try Owners Club insurance (administered by AF).. nothing to loose and many members have saved loads
Brigante
i was with admiral, paying about £1200 for my focus just before renewal i had a change of address n they come back with a quote of £2400!!! just cause of the new address i got a quote from greenlight and they come back with a quote of 695quid with all mods declared when i phoned admiral to say i wouldnt be renewing with them they asked if i'd stay if they'd match the lower quote i just said it was too late. dont see how they'd come down too 700quid anyway after quoting me 2400quid at my new address i dont use comparison sites cause they always give me silly quotes of 1800quid at the cheapest or around 1400 with a silly black box fitted
jeebowhite
I would have gone with Adrian Flux, however the excess was just too high (450 compulsory) whereas with Admiral its £350 for the next 7/8 months and then 150 ish from Janurary onwards. Admiral only just gave me the better quote... Rule of thumb - Do a comparison, then go direct to them, see if they give it cheaper. Also take this scenario. Lets say you have a policy for £1000 for your car. with a compulsory £100.00 excess. If you choose a £100.00 voluntary excess, your quote may only come down by a tenner or twenty quid! if you choose a £200.00 voluntary excess, again, it may only come down by about £50 or £60 quid. Moral of the story (learned the hard way by myself!) dont rely on a high excess to bring your insurance down. I had to find £750 for my excess, which I thought was the cheaper way to go... It wasnt... And when your only going to cost yourself an extra 10-20% on your insurance premium by keeping your excess as low as possible, in the worst case scenario, you will be better off, as you wont need to sell a limb to pay the excess, then sell your bottom, bent over a desk - when the insurance comes renewing next time around... jeebowhite
just thought I would post an update to this. My insurance just cost me another £20.00 Seems that they didnt have it on their system that I have the LED light bulbs on the car, so I have made them aware and its classed as "sport lighting" unless its an "optional extra" from the manufacturer :p So for that £20.00, I can now make any light changes I like to the car, not that I will be doing that much! but be aware, that if you do install any LED footwell lights, or change any standard bulbs for LED ones, you must notify your insurer, as small a change as it seems, its either a small or no fee now, or a void insurance policy if the worst happens! BeccaaCat
I think we won :p Got the insurance down from £2300 to £1400, and they gave us an introductory 3 years NCB too :)
Jack92
I think we won :p Got the insurance down from £2300 to £1400, and they gave us an introductory 3 years NCB too :) Who's that with? I personally feel like the insurance have won every year with me so far, although one of the only reasons i bought the fiesta was cheap insurance my quote on the s1600 is £880. Finally I'm paying less than the value of the car for insurance

b1g_dav3
I remember my first insurance's, £620 fully comprehensive the day I passed my test in an old Matiz, a new one went up by £20 until it was renewal time, then they wanted £2,400... with a years NCB by that point as well. So decided stuff it and bought a Fiesta :P
Mr Singh
the insurance is up for renewal on the focus and was up for renewal on my forfour which has now been payed for and in my case it was my current insurere that got my money and its looking the same with the focus. i bank with santander and they were offering 20% off car insurance, so as you do you fill the online form and wait for the quote and they wanted more detailes from me and gave me a call last monday saying that they are refusing me insurance on the basis that 'my car is too old', i asked for an explination as to why that was and they said that parts for my forfour are not easy to get hold of. my reply was i can go to my mercedes dealer and ask for 'xyz' part and of its not on the dealer shelf or milton keynes they will get me one from germany, and there reply was well there's your answer. what a load of !Removed!! jeebowhite
thats an odd scenario mr singh! never heard that before! lets add another question to the who won... what was your first car and how much I had a 95 plate citroen AX (4 gears plus reverse!) so 11 year old when I insured it at 17, at the time fronting wasn't illegal, and we fronted the insurance... 1600 quid for third party ONLY! I did my own quotes - 2300 for me, the car was bought for 550 quid!
Mr Singh
my first car was a 2000 'W' smart city coupe, the original left hand drive one. it was an import, but managed to persuade one company when looking for quotes that it was uk spec and that it was one of the first batch to come in to the uk. i ended up paying £1200 for 1000 miles... the ineresting part was the speedo mileage was in KM at the time of buying, and as you know a KM is smaller than a mile, but my dad came up with a genious plan, put the mileage 1000 KM ahead of the mileage on the dash. is confusing i know, even i still dont understand it to this day
Brigante
my insurance has just gone up by 96quid cause i've had to purchase business cover still under 800quid though which i suppose is alright for my age
minnis
I'm nearing the end of my first year of driving, after a few months here and there as a temporary driver, as my insurance was too much before now. Got my license at 17, and each year had two 3 month stints on my mum's car (making sure we told them I would be the main driver over this period, which I was assured would make it legal). Got my Focus a year ago, cost me (or rather, my parents! :p) £2250, and this year my girlfriend and I have both gone for Admirial Multi-car, hers is a 1.4 Honda Jazz (20 years old, 0 ncb) for £1100, mine was £670 for 9 months cover (but getting a whole year ncb). So, by being a year older and having 1 years ncb, despite moving to a higher risk area, my insurance will drop by a massive 1800 quid! What a difference one years ncb makes!
jeebowhite
NCB is the main judgement of your policy. if you make a claim, but it doesnt cost you any NCB, you get a better price than if you have a claim that affects your NCB.
Philf1
If you are a new driver the first year is loaded to the hilt as you are a high risk, this is of course the fault of chavvy C***a drivers. After a year the decrease is usually huge. Unfortunately as you get older and build your NCB to the full there is only the option of shopping around or haggling. Best tip I have heard is to get an online quote, then phone them but do it late at night near the end of the month when they need to get a sale to hit their sales targets you can then tease extras out of them until you have the best deal possible.
