Charge light disco

Greetings everyone, I have an issue with my charge/alternator light, it's gone disco  on me!!

It started while on a longish trip, the charge light came on while driving at around 120 kph, our national speed limit. with around 500 km on the road. Since then, the light flickers and goes dim, sometimes almost off, other times bright, accompanied by a relay chattering under the dash around the fuse box. Occasionally, before starting, the light is off, other times it is as normal. The alternator is charging, giving me 13.8v at idle, so I think it is ok. Please help with any suggestions as this is really irritating and I am concerned that it may damage my ECU or other electronics.
