Focus MK 2.5 Strange Issue With Start Up

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm hoping someone has come across this issue before and can help. Really appreciate it if you can.

I own a 2008 Focus MK 2.5 (the facelift model). It's a 1.6 Petrol Manual.

So here is the crux of the issue I'm having -

I tried to start the car around a week or so ago and I got a warning saying "Transmission Malfunction" - when turning off the car and restarting it continued to say the same thing. I then left the engine on not moving until it warmed up a bit. I then tried turning it off and back on again and the warning had now gone and car seems to be operating normally.

I went for a drive and everything was fine. The car then seems to work fine for number of days.

I then had a period of around 2/3 days where I didn't drive and was left on the driveway, I had the same issue again when I tried to use it - but again this seemed to go away once the car had warmed up.

On all of these occasions where this error was showing up - the car was definitely struggling to start as it felt quite laboured when turning over and igniting. But once it was up and running and warm, all was fine.

I drove the car yesterday very briefly and it was fine, no issues starting up, no warnings etc.

Today I've gone to use the car and I've got the same message appearing again, except now it won't actually start.

It does sound like it tries to start/turn over, but then fails followed by a bunch of clicking sounds.

Anyone come across this before? I've not had a chance to try and jump start it, but does this sound like a battery issue? Or something more serious?

(One other odd thing, the temperature gauge in car seems to always now think its -60C outside - not sure if that helps at all).

Thanks very much for any help anyone can provide.

Cheers

Hi Jon,

Have you checked the battery with a multimeter?   Cars can do strange things when the battery's on its way out. How old is it?

Turns out it was just a battery which needed replacing in the end. Everything else in the car was fine.

Got it replaced and all is fine
