2ltdci taking ages to warm up and poor idle

Featured Replies

hi all i have a 2l tdci and it take forever to warm up sometimes 5-6 miles and i have a poor idle. it hunts not much though but enough to hear it and when you are driving you can hear the engine hunting also. i have tried to catch it on video but the sound is not loud enough.

the engine pulls as normal plenty of power (most of the time) except the turbo sounds as if its really loud especially when the engine is under load

any help would be appreciated

Surprised noone has suggested the thermostat yet, it's the usual suspect for these symptoms......

i was thinking thermostat thank you do you know if they are easy to change

stat worth thinking about - however some other things to consider,

1) engine tuners disabling and or reducing the EGR will cause the car to run cold, wear out, have woeful emission control and have a terrible heater in the winter, this is because tractors suck loads of air and produce little heat... without some warn gas going back in it'll run 50C too cold in winter

2) this one shouldn't do much for the heater but may well make it run bad....modern tractors frequently use the glow plugs all the time.... thus they wear out far faster and the control unit needs replacing almost as often as the plugs

Modern diesels don't produce a lot of heat anyway so depending on what the temperature is when your start your car, 5-6 miles warm up may be entirely normal.  My 1.8 TDCi takes about that to start to noticeably warm up.
