Odd radio fault - any ideas?

Featured Replies

4 weeks ago, whilst listening to the radio, the volume just disappeared. The digital display remained the same, the volume control 'worked' increasing/decreasing on screen but just no sound. At the time I was near the garage that sold the car to me so on driving in, the mechanic removed the radio, unplugged it, re-installed, hit the code, and the sound instantly reappeared. Today exactly the same thing happened, though I now have my own 'radio' keys and did the same thing, unplugged, reattached, hit code, and away she went again!

Now, if it only happens once a month I can cope with that, when it did it this morning I was in a shopping center car park and 'fixed' it as it really does only take a few minutes. I know I can buy a replacement radio for not big money, but any ideas what may be wrong?

on the oval radio (mk2.5) you can press and hold (for 15 seconds) the on off button and get the radio to reboot... might be worth a try and a lot easier than removing it

sounds a bit can bus confused to me... not sure why

I never knew to do it for 15 seconds, but instinctively I did try this today as I know anything with a computer chip in it usually benefits from a reboot! LOL I did hold the button in for about 20 seconds to no avail, though if it does it again, now knowing what you just said, I'll hold it in for longer and see if that helps. It would certainly be a much quicker 'fix' than removing and reinstalling the darn thing...

If I was certain it was the radio, I'd just go ahead and get a replacement.

I would say a loose battery terminal.

Curious, what would lead you to that diagnosis?

You said the radio code had to be put back in then it worked. Usually when disconnected the code has to be put in again. Either that or a faulty wire in the loom.

I need to  clarify. The radio code was needed as I was the one that disconnected it. When the sound disappears, the radio screen acts as if nothing has happened. It still shows the time, radio station and the volume confirmation of the volume control going up or down...

I tried to reboot the later Sony 6 disc DAB oval radio the other day.... that did seem to take about 20 seconds but it did it....

In that case read this article it's quite good on points to check in regards to your issue https://www.lifewire.com/car-stereo-only-works-sometimes-4036329

Well, the duration between going faulty has now dropped to 5 days, right bang in the 'annoying' zone! I tried rebooting from the on/off button, but no duration of holding it in would work. I also tried combinations of the menu button as well, holding it in but stubbornly, she remained powered up. On taking her out, I wiggled the wiring plug/loom and not a crackle, so I really don't think that is the cause. Unplugged, re-plugged, entered code and away she went. For the sake of £20 odd will just buy a replacement, I really have no patience for further diagnostics. If the 'new' one acts the same, I'll be back LOL
