Busroutes
I have a 56 reg Focus Mk2 Ghia and I recently lost one of the colour coded door mirror caps. The Ghia was not as commonplace as some of the other models and it has an unusual mirror design with the indicator repeater built into the tip of the mirror assembly. It is almost impossible to find suitable replacement parts from a scrapyard and even if I had, they would have wanted to sell me the entire mirror, not just the cap. I could have got a new official Ford replacement cap for about £70, painted and ready to clip on but I didn't fancy spending that amount of money. It is also possible to get primed covers online but they are sometimes available and sometimes not. There may be doubts about the fit and the quality of some of these pattern parts. But at the time I needed a part, I couldn't get hold of one, and even if I had I'd have still needed to pay to get it sprayed. So here was my workaround. A friend of mine got hold of a standard cap, correct colour but without the cutaway for the indicator. And with some careful marking and a multitool, he cut away a section so that the part can fit. If you look closely you can tell it's a cut-down but it fits with no problems at all. I think that it will usually be far easier to get hold of ready painted standard style caps than the ready painted Ghia versions. Photo below. Next step is to superglue it so it is harder to remove, either by accident or on purpose. I noticed another thread on here that says the Mk2.5 post facelift mirrors are not compatible with the Mk2 cars. I now know how difficult it will be to get hold of a replacement Ghia mirror assembly from a scrapyard. I can't bodge it by fitting a Mk2.5 version, So if I am ever unfortunate enough to lose the entire mirror, I suspect the only thing for it will be to retrofit a standard version to both sides, with the indicator repeater where the Ghia badge is on the wing. I shall be driving along narrow roads very carefully...
