Driver's side window not working

To add to my woes, the window no longer goes down.

When the electrics are turned on, I can hear a very brief, dull click noise but that's it.

I think the last time I used the window, I did notice the sound of the motor seemed a bit rougher than the passenger's side. It could've been my imagination but now seems too much of a coincidence.

Is it possible to make an accurate diagnosis from this information?

I'm thinking this is going to be labour intensive so it'll cost a packet if I take it to the garage. What steps can I do myself to try and fix this?

MOT is due at the end of the month. Can my car can be failed on this?
