Focus help!. 1.6tdci sluggish and egr issues.

Featured Replies

I've just purchased a 1.6tdci 2010 model. It's very clean and 54k on the click. FSH. Within a day the EML has come on and code po40f for egr valve. The car is also running painfully sluggish esp up hill and on the motorway. Previous owner only did very short journeys hence low miles. Can't decide what to do with it repair or get rid. Will the egr sort this or are there likely to be other issues?

Eg. dpf, turbo? It feels like the whole car is clogged up to drive but I'm trying to work out if this is just the egr and a change and all probs solved or if it's likely to be more than just the egr. Also will I need to unblock anything else when doing the egr or is it just an easy straight swap? Help.

That code is for the EGR temperature sensor.  As far as I'm aware, there isn't an EGR temp sensor on these engines!  If it's a generic OBD scanner, maybe it's trying to point to the DPF temp sensor which would cause non-regen and limp mode if that's faulty.  Cheap & easy to change if so.

Short journeys are likely to have clogged the EGR, blocked the DPF and allowed the turbo vanes to become sticky.  It really could be a simple fix or a whole load of trouble...  It's up to you whether its worth persevering with.  I'd recommend Forscan if you do continue with it.

Sorry I typed the wrong code from my poor memory in the above post. the actual code was po42f which is egr I think?

Also it doesn't go into limp mode (yet) just really feels underpowered all the time.

Been quoted £250 for someone to change the egr but trying to work out if it's going to be a slippery money slope or a quick and easy fix.

Ah ok, P042f is indeed 'EGR stuck closed' and usually is the valve itself at fault.  If it's not in limp, you have another fault though.  The EGR being closed won't affect running or power at all, it's when it sticks open that it causes issues.

Ok cheers. I'm assuming in limp the engine light would be on and I'd know?
