Mk3 TCM

Featured Replies

I have the car booked in with Ford for an inspection next week, but I was trying to find out how much a replacement would cost me (worst case). The TCM from Ford is £1100. Is there anyone else out there that can supply a replacement? An upgraded version? Also, who can programme these?

Any advice appreciated.

Mike

What is wrong with the TCM?

Most Powershift problems are caused by the gearbox or clutch itself and not by the TCM.

I have the usual juddering in low gears, jumping out of gear and now the “Transmission Malfunction” dash warning and error code P0606.

If i clear the code it runs ok for a few hundred miles and then all comes back. I’m sure its a software/electronics problem and not mechanical.

I guess Ford will update the software, but I have read that doesn’t really the problem.

If it is not the TCM, what else could be replaced? I would be interested in doing those changes first.

Hi I have same problem did you find out the issue?

I had the software updated and the gear changes are now much smoother. Unfortunately the car has the odd day where it won’t reverse, even though it is physically in reverse. The engine just revs.

I suspect a new TCM is required.

Update - I took the car to Ford and I am now £1.4K lighter. They have replaced the Clutch Pack. On inspection they found damage to the clutch.

I will be interested to see if this has now fixed the problems!

I brought a 2013 ford focus automatic in july 2016 with 17k on the mile had few issues with the car during the first 2 years where the car didn't pick up speed, engine sound clicking noise but TrustFord service team said nothing wrong no faults found and 3 times it didn't go in reverse, reported that also and had the car serviced and again told no issue found so in July 2019 got a loan from the bank to pay off balloon payment of £4k total car paid £13k with only 30k on the mile & 2 weeks ago I got a message on the dashboard saying 'Transmission fault service now' did allot of research and TrustFord told me the car is out of warranty and have to take the car in and pay £125 for the checks. Car taken in to TrustFord they called me saying the report shows issue with the TCM and replacement of the TCM will cost over £600 charges will be £800 including steering rack gaiter repairs. I have decided to go for the repair. Been told by TrustFord there is no other option but to pay and was told on numerous occasions speaking with diffent staff each call that the car has no recall and I'm out of warranty so I have to pay for the repair. With great disappointment I am left with no option but to go ahead with the repair.

I called TrustFord again customer services department told them my situation and with great surprise I was told the transmission issue is under warranty and they raised a case.

Ford Trust case manager called me the next day (Friday 3rd Jan 2020) informed me the repair will be covered by them. The car is in the garage with TrustFord and after many calls to them they have confirmed they will carry out the repair without charges.

I am hoping the car is ready for me on Monday 6th Jan and issue with transmission will be sorted.

If I had not called the customer service department again and again chasing them speaking with several people I would have ended up paying for the repair however glad I didn't give up and gald the person I spoke with the right person checked and found that the issue with the TCM is covered by Ford TrustFord.

Very very concerned that the car has only done 33k and I'm having this issue.

There are so many videos on YouTube and message boards having the same issue.

I hope they fix this issue and I ever get anymore problems with the car.

Either time to sale it and move on or see another couple of years how it goes.

perhaps if it comes back working fine you should sell it, but as time goes on more and more people are aware of the Powershift problems so many buyers will not touch one of these cars with a barge pole and that must have an adverse affect on the price you could sell it for.

I think from reading this forum that on the newer cars Ford have abandoned that gearbox and gone back to the traditional torque converter autoboxes even though they use more fuel.

Definitely in a bit of a dilemma, hoping for the best.

It's a good car overall performance just unlucky to be in this situation.

Ford know about all the issues with this gearbox, if you call Ford Customer Care and tell them how much it has cost to repair they may offer some support (sometimes 50%) depending on mileage and service history (some times 100%)

You need to ensure that the dealer has updated the TCM software to the latest level too.

Hi Paresh,

Was the TCM replacement carried out in your vehicle? My car (2013 model) also has the same problem and local Ford dealership says the car is out of warranty now. Ford customer representative says the warranty offered for TCM is 5 years so I may need to pay for the replacement cost. How did you crack this really? I am surprised why Ford is not allowing for the free replacement even after many people are complaining about TCM failures.
