2010 Mk4 Mondeo 1.8 tdci titanium - ENGINE MALFUNCTION & NOT STARTING

Featured Replies

Hi There

Car: 2010 Mondeo 1.8 tdci with 151,000 miles well maintained - Serviced recently (500 mile ago) with all filters changed & 2x T/belts done.

I have owned this car for 4 years now & it has never missed a beat but it just died on me the other night whilst driving at 40mph & now displays engine malfunction on the dash clocks - I put the clocks into diagnostic mode and 1 fault code came up - C41668 which points at a possible control module (of some sort) failure

Removed the battery, recharged & left car without battery for 24 hours - Re-fitted battery but car not starting still & still displaying 'Engine Malfunction'

Ran diagnostics with a Delphi diagnostic machine and no codes coming up

When cranking over it all sounds normal but no signs of even trying to start - Bled the injectors at the pipe work from fuel rail and fuel coming out OK - Glow plugs removed & glowing fine with a perfect power supply - Battery strong & at full strength

Has anyone any ideas ?

Get yourself  code reader and read the proper codes. Also you can monitor cranking speed, fuel rail pressure while you're trying to start it. www.tunnelratelectronics ones are excellent but you'll need a windows laptop and download for free Forscan software for it. Often even professional code readers don't find all the codes, but these elm327 based are excellent, and under £20, which is way cheaper than a dealer will charge for just ONE reading of the codes.... Also, tunnelrat are UK based and will answer any Q?s you might have. From memory, you need at least 200rpm cranking speed and 230 bar fuel rail pressure to start.

Have you checked that the fuel filter is full of fuel... if its empty that's often a sign of air getting into the leak-off pipes.

Had you been driving in heavy rain or been thro' a deep puddle before it died?. Checked ALL the fuses?

Hi Thanks for replying

As stated in my post the car has been scanned by a Delphi diagnostic machine & also has produced a code from the dash clocks of the car - Code C41668

The fuel filter is full of fuel as I bled the system at the injectors pipework coming from fuel rail (As per original post)

Cranking speed is over 200 rpm - Hasn't been driving in heavy rain lately & to be honest it shouldn't matter whether its raining or not

As for the fuel rail pressure will have to check that out

Any other suggestions is invited

Read on a similar post that there may be a module in the passenger foot well that can suffer from corrosion in the wiring ??

Forget yer Delphi scanner, a reader running Forscan is your best friend here and be the best £20 you've spent. You need to read the pid codes. Re rain question: considering water ingress to the electronics as a possibility. Again, checked All fuses?

Hi

Thanks for replying again nicam49

Checks done:

1. Fully inspected engine & engine bay for any disconnected electrical plugs or disconnected / broken pipework etc - All OK

2. Full check of fuses & relays both in engine bay & inside cabin - All OK

3. Ran diagnostics using a good reputable diagnostic machine - No codes present.

4. Put car dashboard instrument cluster into diagnostic mode to reveal 1 code linked to  displayed engine malfunction symbol - C41668  fault code - Not a lot of info on this at present

5. All fuses &  both fuse boxes dry & free from any water ingress & corrosion - All electrical connections in engine bay clean & dry & free from corrosion as far as I can see

6. Fuel filter clean & full of diesel - Diesel in system rite up to injectors.

7. Engine cranking speed over 200 RPM - Live data from Delphi diagnostics upon cranking

8. Fuel rail pressure - This needs checked out - Delphi live data should show this up upon cranking

Think next steps are:

1. Check fuel rail pressure.

2. Check engine timing.

3. Remove 4x injectors and get them tested.

4. High pressure fuel pump check considering the engine has 150,000 miles on it ???

Any other ideas people or can anyone shed any light on this C41668 fault code ?
