1.8 TDCI starts then dies

Featured Replies

The problem is with a Galaxy with the 1.8l 125ps duratorq TDCI engine (engine code QYWA). The problem is that sometimes when starting from cold, the engine will start then immediately die as if it had been switched off. Usually if I leave it for a minute it will then start and keep running, sometimes it will take 10 minutes before it will start. There are no fault codes. It has been like this for a few years, but it used to only happen once in a while.
All glow plugs read about 10 ohms cold and around 400 ohms hot.
I have used Forscan (On Board Diagnostics programme) to capture the fuel pressure and rpm and can see that when it dies and when it carries on, the fuel pressure builds up at the same rate. When it dies the rpm drop to zero in about 0.6 seconds but the fuel pressure is maintained for a second.
If it is running and the ignition is switched off the revs fall at the same rate as when it dies on its own.
So I am sure the fuel pressure is not a problem.
I had the injectors tested. 3 failed on high electrical impedance. They have been replaced with new ones. (For this engine there is no need/way to programme the PCM for the new injectors.)
The car seems to be running better, but the 'start then die' problem is still there sometimes.
As I thought it could be an intermittent crankshaft position sensor I have replaced that, but the problem is still there. It has had a new battery recently.
Has anyone got any idea what the problem might be or any parameters that I should look at with Forscan.

I think I have found the problem, the ERG valve was stuck. I have freed it off and the problem seems to have gone.
