Replacing Ford PATS on Mondeo MK2

Has anyone replaced a defective Ford PATS for an alternative system. Can it be done and what do'es it entail. I have found the existing PATS on my Mondeo MK2 it is behind the C/Locking  Module, have removed front clip and it appears to held at the back by a shroud, which is held in place by another hard to get at small bolt. Any advice is  welcome.
