No Start/No Crank/ Pats flash code 13 Key not recognised

Featured Replies

Hi, Can any of the attached components attached to ECU which may have failed give the code 13 key not recognised flashing. Just a shot in the dark. Still struggling with no start, engineer thinks it may an outside ecu component but at present cannot communicate with ECU.

Thanks

Mick

Tell us what model, year, etc you've got. What have you tried/swapped so far?  Have you tried a new trasnsponder ring (around ignition switch) have you tried using a spare key? Is your car OBD compliant anyway?... My '02 Mondeo isn't and I can't use any old code reader to connect to the ecu.  How about taking your key to a locksmith - I think Timpsons can even do this - and see if they can read your pats key on their equipment.

I've just done a quick interweb search, and it looks like you're wasting your time, as your mk1 isn't obd2 compliant. Here's a sample result from a user on the talkford.com forum

'i have a late 95 mondeo lx.. i have an elm327 obdII interface and software. i've found the obd port and plugged it all in and tried creating a connection between my laptop and car, but all i get is an error message saying that a connection cant be made i've checked and double checked that its all going through the right comms port.. does anyone have any idea's please?'

Here's another one:
the earlist ecu that can be read with the obd port is the EEC-V '

and some more on the same thread:

' The port is under the steering column but as stated is not OBD2 compliant. I made an OBD2 reader about a couple years ago and even though it managed to connect with the port it could not initialize it. (Yes the reader did work on other cars that were OBD2 compliant.) According to my manual
"The engine management system(EMS) fitted to the majority of Ford vehicles from 1985 to 1996 was Ford EEC IV. In 1996 EEC V began to replace EEC IV on some models. EEC V will eventually replace all vehicles currently equipped with EEC IV. Other engine management systems fitted to European Ford vehicles include Weber IAW (Ford Cosworth), Mazda EGi(Ford Probe) and Nissan ECCS (Ford Maverick)." Hope this helps. Should you need any more info about it,fault codes, or diagnostic procedures i'd be happy to help

whats the ecu on the 95 mk1's dude?

most likely be EEC-IV I dont think they used the EEC-V on mondeo's until the mk2 came out :)

Yep, only the EEC-V is compliant, you need a flasher for EEC-IV systems - a lot of useful info on fordscorpio.co.uk

So you see, your mk1 isn't OBD2 compliant, as it uses the ecu version EEC-IV.
This means that NO 'standard' code reader will work with it.
Maybe do some digging on that Ford scorpio.co.uk website

Thanks for all the info. Any idea's what diagnostic tools would communicate with the ECU. Looks like the engineer has got it wrong if he is using a OBD scanner. Any idea where I could get a Transponder to ECU Connector wiring diagram and ECU pin out to enable me to test wires for Continuity etc. Being an old git maybe it's just a broken wire to the ECU.

Thanks for your help much appreciated.

Mick.

You  could try looking on that scorpio website to see if anyone there found a solution... and try asking on the mondeo mk1 section of www.talkford.com.  Email tunnelrat electronics to ask if their readers are compatible. Also ask if any local mechanic has got a Ford IDS system, which is bound to work Also, ..Is there a Haynes manual for the mk1?  If your problem is with the pats system, have you tried your spare key? If the answer is 'what spare key?'  then maybe take it to a locksmith to see if they can read it,  and/or look into getting the pickup coil (which on the mk3 is around the ignition switch) changed. Just a few thoughts there...Good luck anyway and hopefully you'll update the thread to keep us informed!

Thanks for help, we found the PATS Module behind the Ash Tray. It's a separate Module not integrated in the ECU. Brush cleaned the PCB gently and the car now starts. No further problems for the last two weeks. Fault code was 13.
