Screws And Tyres

Featured Replies

Hi All

So went to take some rubbish down to my local tip today, turn ignition on, tyre sensor warning comes up. Check the tyre that is causing warning, screw in tyre, great I thought.

On closer inspection looks like done deliberately due to position and no wear of screw head (see picture).

Off to a local tyre repair station, they take one look and confirm my suspicion, also tell me that new tyre as unable to carry out puncture repair. Ok, l will have a new tyre then.

After tyres changed, technician gave me the screw, as I said I am going to report incident to police (I know they will not be able to do anything, as no evidence either than screw, and I am fairly sure they would not be able to do anything with it).

Screw was 3 inches long (see second picture).

As far as I know I have not cheesed anyone off in my area.

Oh, the Joy's of screws (and nearly £180.00 lighter).

Happy Christmas And New Year.

Happy motoring

yes there ok now

I feel your pain.  This happened to mine a few weeks back.  https://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/111561-puncture/   .   Around £180 to replace too.

Hi Dezwez

Ta for confirming that pictures have uploaded.

One consolation i suppose,  the defective tyre warning feature is doing it's job.

Difficult to tell the wear on the screw. Looks worn so possibly picked up on road. As it’s in the shoulder there might not be full pressure on it to cause the head to wear more. Plus it may have been picked up on your previous journey, so no time to wear. Bit of an expensive pick up but easily done unfortunately.

Unlucky, if it had been nearer the middle of the tread it could have been plugged.

Don't see what it being a new tyre has to do with it being repairable though?

Hi All

Mozz

Another consolation being the new tyre I bought has lifetime warranty. If I get any bulges, screws, puntures, etc, I get new tyre under the lifetime warranty.

This, so I was told, applies to any of over 200 branches of the tyre centre I used.

Edge Of Reason

The screw was not worn at all, the damage being from when tyre technician pulled screw out of tyre. There were no marks on screw head at all, until I drove to tyre shop.

The picture of the screw does not show how new it is. The second picture being to show how long the screw was.

But, as I said, it has happened, I have had to deal with the consequences, police informed, but unable to do anything (as I thought).

As Mozz said, luckily the TPMS system done its job, otherwise the consequences could potentially have been a lot different.

I do hear where you are coming from with what you said, but after tyre technician told me he thought deliberate damage (up until this point I had not spoken of my suspicions).

That is why I think what I think.

Guy Heaton

Due to the screw being so close to the side wall of the tyre, a safe repair is not possible, hence I had to purchase a new tyre, (sorry I did not make myself clearer).

The damaged tyre had been on my car for some time.

As you said, had it been nearer the middle of the tread, could have been repaired.

Hi All

Just an update. Chatting with some of my neighbours about my tyre, some of them have also suffered the same problem which now makes me even more certain that it was done with some form of intent.
Problem being that no one has seen or heard anything when any of these attacks have happened.
Updated CCTV now on its way. Will it catch the culprit/s, I doubt it (who knows?), but we at least have to try.

Happy motoring

Just for info, I have found camskill.co.uk cheapest for my Edge, set of 4 (255/45 20 Pirelli Scorpion Verde) cost under £500 delivered. £15 each to fit at local tyre shop.

My local independent changed all 4 of mine (Same as the original Pirelli Scorpion Verde) for just over £550 fitted. They initially gave me a quote of £225 each + fitting until I showed them a few web suppliers (Black Circles, camskill, etc) and I asked if I would be better giving my hard earned cash to them instead  ... so they quickly price matched! They didn't even argue. It pays not to just accept what numbers they throw at you.

Just ordered my new set of 4 Scorpion Verde 255/45 R20 XL 105W for £421.80 delivered. £60 to fit all at local tyre shop.

Update: fitted all 4 for £54.

Not complaining at that!

Over the years I've had four punctures through going to the tip, all of them being non repairable, I've stopped going now unless it's absolutely necessary.
