Gear selector cable collet release button

Featured Replies

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I was reversing my mk4 Mondeo out of a car park today and put into first when the gear lever went all floppy with the car locked in first gear. After looking at it I managed to hook the end of the selector cable onto the ball end and thought it was okay. However after setting off and getting the car into fourth gear it disconnected again. I managed to get the car home and I’ve had a look at it however whenever I try to reconnect the collet it comes straight back off with a little resistance.

could it be some dirt inside the area the ball joint sits in? Or does it sound like I need a new cable?

I had a focus mk1. Cable came off at bottom of gear lever, it was like ball socket had worn so was loose on the ball. Managed to get it to stay back on with cable ties. It was like that for 3 or 4 years before sold the car so repair seemed to have done the job
