Turbo soot

Featured Replies

2015 1.6tdci estate, 88,000mls full service history.

Started getting an exhaust smell in the cabin of the car & when I checked under the bonnet I saw soot around the turbo unit. The smell disappears as soon as I start driving & I've not noticed any drop off in performance or unusual engine noise. 35a687ecc7504240d13f93699ab2b310.jpg

Maybe the DPF clamp just needs tightening?  You'll need to remove that heatshield to see it.

I get the occasional puff of smoke on mine when the DPF is full and needs a regen, the backpressure just pushes it through the weakest point which is the DPF clamp, but if you haven't noticed any performance drop then that's probably not the issue here.

Had a 2006 Focus 1.6 TDCI with the same exhaust smell in cabin symptoms (smell when stationary, no smell when driving). In the end it was worn injector seals and small amount of gases were escaping from the combustion chamber. It was such a small amount it did not impact engine operation but smell was noticeable.
