Floppy gear stick ford Ka

Featured Replies

Hi people, I was in McDonald’s drive through today in neutral and when I went to put in first gear the gear stick went floppy and wouldn’t select a gear. My car has now been recovered to my house but it still won’t select a gear and is floppy does anyone have any ideas as to what it could be and how to fix it.

I think your ka is made by fiat so might not have the same features as a ford.  Years ago this same thing happened to my focus mk1. having some idea of how these worked I pulled up the gear level gaiter and found that one of the ball joint sockets on the end of the gear level cable had come detached from the gear level mechanism. There are two cables, one for the front to back movement of lever and one for sideways.  the ball joint socket had worn but I managed to get it to stay on with some cable ties (which lasted years after i did this).

There is similar fixings at other end of cables where they go on the gearbox.

As I say, I do not know if yours has same kind of mechanism.

Years ago I had a fiat 127 which did the same thing, that has a big metal rigid rod going from bottom of gever lever to gearbox. Under the car, not inside it. On that, the rod actually broke (the metal broke). I do not know if any newer cars have this type of mechanism.
