Intermittent engine/power steering/brake malfunction

Featured Replies

Hi guys I'm new but I joined up in hoping someone may of experienced similar.  I bought this car in fair condition for price.  I done all the check plus more and found bar two rear brake discs which could do with changing from pitting but still function car is ok.  2009 /58 plate 154k miles on tdci 1.5/6 and engine doesn't sound to bad either.

Anyway this issue did not happen the first day, but happened 2nd day.....not sure if anyone could of temporary fixed etc I'd assume unlikely.......

So it beeps comes up power steering malfunction followee by engine malfunction revs shutdown and car idles so essentially can't drive .  I've noticed a couple things coincidence or not I don't know.

This seems to happen when cold......when up to temp halfway on bar, this doesn't happen anymore.  I plugged in a obd to get codes and then inadvertently found something else strange....

When it enters the malfunction if I apply force pushing the obd UP which is right side of driving wheel it goes back into drive.  I don't know if this could indicate loose or bad wiring , but if that's the case why does it go away when warm.  However it is weird because sure enough every time I push upwards in that area revs go back on and fault goes , but as soon as I stop applying pressure not long after fault occurs again until warm it is.

I have screenshot all codes that have come up.  Besides this I'm really happy with the car.  It goes 90mph without issue steering don't shake wheels pretty straight!!  Engine is quite consistent not shaky and too loud.  Gearbox is smooth.  All electrics inside seek to work flawlessly apart from the cigarette lighter....don't no if that could cause an issue.....

Other thing is a Parrot has been hard wired into fuse box I guess not sure if that could be a factor.

Thanks in advance.  No smoking / big leaks / low fluids etc everything seems to work fine.

One last thing though , there is a diesel/oil smell in cabin.

Hi and welcome that's a lot of faults I would start by checking the fuse box and it connectors in the passenger footwell this is easily disturbed and cause many faults in fact check the fuse box in engine bay too it can get corrosion on the connectors. After that I would ask in the focus section, as the car is basically a Focus, a lot more traffic in that section

have you cleared the codes and see which ones reappear? codes are not dated, some could be old from old temporary blips that are not a current problem. You need to clear them and then drive and recheck what reappears.

Re the OBD port. There is constant data flow through the HS canbus between the instrument console and the ECU and along the way it links into the ABS and on some models the power steering pump.  And along the way links to the OBD port. I have not examined the back of the OBD port but I suspect the wires are crimped on to the connector socket with each of the HScanbus pins having two wires. one to the instrument console and one to the ECU on each of the two HScanbus pins. I am wondering if the crimping here is dodgy which is causing the HScanbus communication problem. (as flexing the socket seems to have an effect on what happens).

this post here contains some stuff relating to troubleshooting the canbus with ohmeter, and where connectors are etc

probably the abs pump as they are no 1 on the canbus and it will cause the steering fault as the steering angle sensor is controlled by the abs

unless its your tja1040 chip in the instrument cluster or the actual soldered on plug

the addition of the obd tester has a calming effect on the canbus,
a canbus and theres is 3 levels on your car has terminating resistors at each end to stop the signals bouncing back, the obd scanner acts as a sponge and soaks up the signals

Just to update everyone and anyone who may have similar issue.  I done two things and have not had an issue.since ,cleared the errors and no further errors have happened touch wood.

I fully charged and changed the battery.

I took the speedo cluster out of the car.   I didn't even go to the process of stripping it down I just left in in house overnight give it a few taps give the connecting point a blow and blowed on the gaps of the circuit board.  Put battery and cluster back in car next day, also blew the connectors on car in case maybe any debris.  All errors then gone.

Couldn't tell you what exactly the issue.was but them are the only two things I've done .  With am obdi reader plugged in port when I pushed up on connector when issues were happening previous, it would bring it back to life... That makes me think it wasn't strictly a battery issue but who knows, just glad it's all.working
