Another novice Sync3 question - On-board modem?

Featured Replies

What is the on board modem?  I can see it in the Sync3 system options but I don't know what it is.

On older models, the only way for Sync to connect to the outside world was to do it through your phone. i.e. pair the phone to the car via bluetooth, then the phone connects to the internet. Giving the car access to the outside world. This can be used for map traffic, weather, streaming audio, updates (not in the UK), etc.

On newer vehicles (and older models from other brands), that connection to the outside world (a modem) is built into the car, so that it is self sufficient! That allows apps like Ford Pass to remotely talk to the car (i.e. for remote start), allows for downloads, getting the car position and also allows for other remote functions and data downloads (traffic, etc) without the need for an external phone link!
