What’s the process to check those?

I've mixed feelings over actually checking them... for years I had clunks from the rear end despite me testing everything to try tracing the source, then at last year's mot the extra-vigilant tester gave the suspension a right going over and as I was driving home one of the ball joints gave way. So as both were original to the car, I replaced them both, and for the 1st time in years I enjoyed clunk-free driving.
