Mk4 Titanium X HID issues

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Just bought a mk4 mondeo, 10 plate(facelift), didnt notice when i bought it that passenger side headlight is not working. Took it apart and found its a HID Osram style. I have replaced the lamp and ballast but still nothing working. I have 11.2volts at the ballast.

(Main Beam and side lights working but not Dipped beam)

Went to check with lamp on the other side and found its a halogen.

Turns out the previous owner damaged the passenger side wing and headlight, and looks like they have fitted a HID headlamp instead of the halogen type.

My question is, can you just plug a HID style headlamp in and it work or is there some kind of modification required?

Help appreciated,

Thanks

If it helps anyone helping me, if i wire the ballast direct to battery everything works.

If i wire the live 11.4v from loom to ballast with my own ground straight to chassis it still doesnt work.

Is 11.4v enough to start my ballast?

If the car had halogen lights to start with your going to be better off changing the HID back to halogen.

HID will require a self leveling system and headlight washers in order to pass an MOT.

Isnt that for aftermarket fitted HIDs though? This is a ford OEM HID...

4.1.6. Headlamp cleaning devices

You must inspect vehicles first used on or after 1 September 2009 equipped with headlamp washers.

You can identify HID headlamps from:

  • ‘DCR’ mark on the headlamp lens or body
  • an igniter module or inverter behind the headlamp
  • taking a few seconds to reach full intensity
  • a bluish tinge to the light

HID headlamps use high voltage. You should take care when inspecting these headlamps.

Defect Category
(a) Headlamp cleaning device:

(i) inoperative
(ii) inoperative in the case of LED or gas discharge systems (HID)

Minor
Major

As yours is a 2010 you would need the washers or it's a major fail.

While looking for that I also found this -

4.1.1. Presence, condition and operation

You must test all mandatory headlamps.

‘Mandatory headlamps’ are a matched pair of main beam headlamps and a matched pair of dipped-beam headlamps. These can be separate or a single pair of headlamps.

Lamps are matched if they:

  • emit light of substantially the same colour and intensity
  • are the same size and shape that they are symmetrical to each other

So you will need either another HID light and washer system fitted or another halogen light.
