Road Tax

Featured Replies

Hi

Just confirmation please

I have a 2018 (registered 31/03/2018) Edge Sport 235bhp  152 G/KM which i bought as 6 months old.

My Vehicle Tax is due end of May and the renew price is £261.25 for 6 months, or £475 for 12 months.

Now i am assuming that the Gov't don't get their pricing wrong, but just wanted to check that those of you with this engine, are also paying this amount?

Thanks

This will probably be because the list price for your vehicle when new exceeded £40,000 before any discounts were applied.
The second time the vehicle is taxed from new, an extra charge of £325 per year applies, along with the standard rate of £150. This extra charge applies for five years from the second time a vehicle over £40,000 is taxed.

More info is available at the gov.uk website here

As above. I'm looking at buying a Tourneo Custom Titanium X and it's the same for that too.

Did the Edge really cost over £40k?  I must be well out of touch with new cars!

Hi All

My Edge is 2016 registered. Having just checked online, my tax this year will be £160.00
My Edge is a Titanium, Manual, 4WD/AWD 180ps (so is lower rating than autos that seem to be normally around the 235ps) and likewise my emissions are rated at 149 (again autos are higher, so I am in a lower band here as well), with plenty of extras, before discounts was over 40k to buy.
I do recall that as government changed the road tax rules to include hybrids, electric etc with the extra 5 years/cars value included that were very low or no tax prior to changes from late 2016 onwards (after my purchase), that when I am asked what I would recommend, I answer by saying if you want to avoid higher taxes then by 2016 or older if buying a used vehicle.

Stay safe

Happy motoring

It's not that simple unfortunately.  Really depends on the car you're buying.

1st April 2017 the tax system changed from emissions based bands to a flat rate across all cars of £145 a year.   Except if you buy a car that cost more than £40k new, as they have an extra premium on top.

So generally if you're buying a petrol car (with the exception of very small engines) it's cheaper to tax after 2017.  If you're buying a diesel car, it's cheaper to tax before 2017.  If you're buying a car over £40k, it will depend on the emissions as to whether it was cheaper before the tax changes or not.

Hi All

Sounds like the government moved the goalposts since I really last looked into all the ins and outs of it, so I accept that I stand corrected.

Stay safe

It's not road tax it's VED, none of the money goes to roads, road tax was abolished in 1936, sorry but it's my pet hate.
