2nd thoughts on oil in turbo cold side & egr intake side

Featured Replies

Seemed like I was down on boost below 2.2k and economy (1.8tdci) so started investigating and found oil in both said parts. Egr is not clogged and turbo shaft has no play side-side or in-out on the cold side. Anybody have any ideas what else I might look into before I take the turbo off for closer inspection?

Every turbo car I’ve ever worked on has always had a oil build up in the pipe work and intercooler. This is normal as the turbo shaft Bearing actually runs on a layer of oil Injected in constantly so over time you can see the build up of the small amount that escapes, you get exactly the same amount on the exhaust side but this is instantly burnt up so unless your blowing blue smoke every time you accelerate I’d say this is normal. The lack of noticeable boost could be stuck vanes (VNT) in the Turbo exhaust Housing.

Gave it all a good clean this morning and will keep monitoring it. Noticed the oil started from the rocker cover intake vent so pulled the dipstick with the engine running. Moderate amount of blowby and has used 0.5L oil in 3k miles which doesn't look good. Before that it did 10k and zero oil burning so I either have worn ring(s) or blocked crankcase valve. Had zero blowby when I bought the car in November so this is new. I definitely have a boost problem somewhere too. Accelerating with the window open I can hear an out of place noise from 1.8k-2.2k rpm escaping somewhere. Thought it was turbo starting to rub housing hence checking it. Not much oil on outside of intercooler pipes so wondering if it's a gasket from exhaust manifold-turbo or turbo-cat causing the noise and boost leak. Or piston compression😬

Where's the pcv on the lynx motor?
