Indicator fault

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Recently purchased my 2012 Mondeo 2.0tdci Business Edition and overall very happy with it.

But it does have a fault which I am hoping someone may be able to help with please.

When the indicators have been used, and the stalk is returned to the middle/OFF position, sometimes, the right hand indicator will continue flashing. Move the stalk up or down and then return to OFF and this 99% of the time cancel the indicator.

Last night when I went to bed, I noticed the right hand side parking light was on. Went down to the car, checked lights switch... Position OFF 👍 Checked indicator stalk... Position OFF.

Pushed the stalk down (left) and this cancelled the parking light.

Does this sound like a fault with the indicator switch itself, or maybe the flasher relay possibly?

Any help/advice than can be offered would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

That’s standard.
The over run indicator is a setting.
Indicator down when parked and off will put parking lights on.

When I turned into my road, I had to use the left turn indicators. They cancelled OK, as normal. Parked up at home, no further use of indicators, so puzzled as to why my right hand side parking lights would be on.

Sounds like the stalk to me!

If it's not that, you could be looking at the GEM which would be a much more expensive repair.

i agree it sounds like stalk. if it was mine I might be thinking about spraying wd40 into it and see it that helps. but you might need to remove the switch assembly from the steering column to be able to get any wd40 right in there.

I have this exact same fault on my 2012 Mondeo, but it also randomly activates the right indicator when driving along, as well as the parking light when stopped etc. Seems the right indicator circuit somehow goes live without moving the stalk. Did you find a fix for this?

I think from what people have previously said about the faulty indicator switch covers the fault you are experiencing . I have had a similar fault on a different make of vehicle and managed to fix it with electrical contact spray . It depends if the switch is broken or just sticking . I removed the cowlings around the steering column so I could see the switch arm as it went into the switch cluster and found it was all gummed up with dust etc, using the contact spray and a tissue I managed to clean it quite thoroughly. Afterwards it worked perfectly . After I cleaned it I could hear the switch clicking on and off properly so I felt confident at that point I had fixed the fault and didn’t need a new switch.
