Focus stutter/pulling from cold start and when hot at 30mph

Featured Replies

Hi,

My Focus starts first time but when i go to pull away it will bounce and jump in first gear for a while, after i get to fifth it is ok but have noticed that at around 30mph it stutters and pulls back a bit, Green flag have been out but could not find a fault and my local garage have not been able to fix the issue, they said it may be the ignition coil pack, I have looked for the mass air flow senser but I think this model does not have one, any help would be great.

Thanks Chris.

If it starts OK and judder when pulling away it could be a bad contact on the connector that plugs into the throttle body. When the car warms up the connector works better. Unplug the connector and spray wd40 on it and that might fix the problem.

Thanks very much, will give that a go, would there be a video on how to do this any where that you know of?

Scotty Kilmer youtube how to stop car hesitation - throttle position sensor. Gives advice about replacing it.

I would just clean the connector pins with wd40 and leave the  sensor in place. The connector has a locking tab on it that needs pulling up to allow it to be unplugged.

If that doesn't fix it buy an obd2 code reader to carry out your own diagnostic test.

You should really use a proper contact cleaner spray rather than WD40 which is basically just a water displacement product.

WD40 do a whole range of sprays these days including contact cleaner, always worth having a selection in the shed!

Have decided to buy Seafoam and inject it through the air intake, hopefully that will also clean the throttle body.

The problem might just be the dirt on the connector that turns the motor to open the throttle valve. You still need to unplug the connector and spray contact cleaner on the connector pins. Seafoam will not clean them as it only goes inside the throttle body. The connector is on the outside.

After spraying the seafoam you will get a lot of white smoke for a few minutes. The car will run better. But it might still judder.
