Engine stopped at random

Featured Replies

Hello All,

Forgive me, I'm new here, hope someone might have some insight into a strange issue with my Focus Mk2 (55) 1.6 (100hp).

Last Tuesday evening, I was driving down the A14 quite happily, until I put my foot on the accelerator to give me a little power to change lanes, and there was nothing - no power at all. No warning lights or messages on the dash, no nasty noises from the engine bay. I had to coast to stop in Lane 1, thanks to the A14 now being a 'smart' motorway. After a call to the police and the Traffic Officers turning up and towing me to a layby, while waiting for the AA I gave it a good try; it would turn over but not 'catch', and the the engine was vibrating when turning over, akin to when I had a spark plug go on me (washer jets issue!)

AA man came and checked fuses and inlet hose, but couldn't diagnose, although I'm a bit annoyed he didn't try to read codes or I didn't insist he did. Got it towed to Ford dealer in Cambridge and left it there. Initially thought it could be fuel starvation and therefore fuel pump.

Heard back today that they tested it and couldn't find a fault; it started first time (after sitting for nearly a week) and ran without issue ('beautifully') for several miles. Obviously I'm reluctant to take it back straight away, in case it happens again, so I've let them have more time to test it. All fluid levels were/are good, all belts in good condition, and it had done a round trip of 60 miles 2 days prior to cutting out on me.

Any ideas?

My wife's car had this problem, water had got into the BCM and affected the fuel pump.

Get the BCM checked

Hello DaveT70,

Many thanks for the reply. Forgive me, what is the BCM?

Thanks,

JonnyT

BCM = Body Control Module. Otherwise known as the passenger compartment fuse box (below/behind the glove box).

Sorry.

Yes fuse box under glovebox, water can drip onto it from the air con unit

Although it looks like a fuse box, inside it is printed circuit board with computer chips on. It is more like a mini computer . It is above passengers feet. It has a million wires on it (not quite a million) and hinges downwards. I did remove one and dismantle it to see if I had the water problem but in the end my problems were elsewhere. My symptoms weren’t the same.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Well the garage (Ford main dealer, no less!) say they have checked the dash and it checks out ok, and they have had no fault codes to refer to, so I just have to keep waiting I guess?

Thanks,

Jonny

Well, after dropping it off on the evening of Tuesday 14th July, it is still currently at the garage - the larges Ford main dealer in Cambridge (beginning with 'M').

Apparently they don't have a clue what is wrong with it. Really gives you confidence eh?
