[MK3] Beat way to run cable for reverse camera?

Featured Replies

Installed reverse camera and replaced the boot handle (that was the easy part) which is the best way to run the rca to the front?

Also i have the grey connector in the boot but is it just easier to ignore that and just wire power to the reverse light?

I went through the headline on the left hand side and ran it all the way down the top left and then dropped the final part behind the weather seal on the passengers side closest to the glove box. Little panel pops of the side of the glove box and you can then run the rca literally over the inside of the glove box. Took me 20 mins :)

As for power, I simply spliced in to the rear wiper motor connector and all is fine. Camera comes on instantly

Which cables did you connect to in the rear wiper motor?

Red to the black cable if anyone is wondering.

Anyway camera was been fitted and working but the angle is not great... Anyone know the best camera to use? Tried a few of amazon and all the same.

Also how do you get the coloured lines up? It says to cut the cable if you don't want it but my wire still connected. There's another cable near the back of the stereo that's not doing anything so assuming something to do with that.

I've often wondered why proper camera mounts don't have any adjustment in them. My own camera mount which I made myself is as crude as anything, but infinitely adjustable allowing perfect angle and alignment of all guidelines..

Hi Stephen, what did you do for a screen in your Mk 2 and did you buy it as a kit or separate parts?

Here ya go buddy, maybe not 'high tech', but I can see clearly behind me now which is exactly what I wanted!

A ready made answer, I like it.  I have a TomTom satnav but never noticed if it had a camera input option so will take a look.  My Mk4 already has built in GPS but no camera and with it and being an estate with restricted visibility would definitely benefit from that.

Not ideal but I'm going to try take camera out and use something to pack the back to increase the angle. Got some plastic wedges that I can use temporarily then try some silicone around it to seal it.

Stuffed some cardboard behind it which has improved the angle sightly. Better than before I think but I don't think it will last.

Still can't get the guidelines to display 😒

Guidelines are usually controlled by the BCM for the factory camera. Mines an aftermarket one wired to a socket on the apim harness. Even though I’ve not cut the little wire on mine, still no guidelines. Weird. Hoping someone may know?

I know with the after market cameras with guidelines, these will not move when the steering wheel is turned. I know that much lol!

Just assumed the coloured lines would appear over the yellow composite cable.

Another thing I noticed is the rear parking sensors don't display on the screen but I do get the audible beep.

So something else for the to do list.

Usually, the camera itself on the aftermarket setup provides the lines and you simply cut a little yellow looped cable to remove them. Sort of hardcoded to the camera in a way if that makes sense.

Well, that's down to programming aswell but if you're in the same boat as me... which could be a possability... it might be down to what sensors are actually installed on the rear. Even though mine were factory fitted rear parking sensors.. they don't go through the PAM module so all i get is an audible beep rather than the little car displaying up front on the Sync unit.

At somepoint the boot liner is getting ripped out and i want to figure out how these so called 'factory rear sensors' are actually connected.

Now if you have the PAM module, your sensors would plug in to that and that module would produce the distance display and the little car on your headunit. (PAM module should be located behind the liner in the boot on the right handside. Near where you unscrew the clip for your rear tail light if you need to replace a bulb)

I did get display on sync1 screen. They are factory fitted apart of the city pack back then I think. Which included parking sensors and folding mirrors.

Until I sort this damn PNP cable I am probably just wasting my time lol

Cool, you’ve definitely got the PAM module in that case which is good! See I never had the display for the sensors on sync 1! But some people did this retrofit starting off with no display and still
Managed to code in the display without any issues! Pot luck I guess!

I get the feeling that your next car will have a reversing camera built in! LOL 🤣
