1.6tdci Exhaust Leak

Featured Replies

Hi all,

First time posting on here! I have searched for this but get lost in the mass of topics, so apologies if it's already on here.

Bought a used 2008 focus 1.6tdci. I am aware of the common issues, and sure enough have found some...

It would appear I have an exhaust leak from either the manifold or turbo itself. (I also have injector seal issue). See picture for the massive buildup of soot on the turbo and under the heat shield.

Any pointers or experience as to where the leak is coming from, as I can't definitively locate it.

Thanks!

Wow, I haven't seen one that bad before!!

Looks like it's coming from the centre of the turbo as the DPF side looks clean?

Can you get a picture in the other direction to see what the inner face of the hotside looks like?

Haven't got photo to hand, but the hot side it very clean. The dpf itself is a little crusty, but nothing obviously major.

There is soot where the manifold meets the head, so Im wondering if that's where the leak is, and the heat shield is "channelling" the gases out over the top of the turbo?

This might be helpful. I've never tried it but it looks like it works finding leaks around the manifold.

I think you've answered your own question then lol.  Can't say manifold leaks are common on these but that's the only place it can come from if it's not the turbo itself.

If you can't get your hand in to feel for a leak, top tip is to hold a bit of tissue in needle nose pliers and you'll see where the blow is when the tissue moves.

So turns out the leak is from the turbo to dpf flange join. Coming out from under the pgp clamp (which I think is the wrong size fitted from whenever work has been done previously)
