Bluetooth audio in a mk2.5 - where is the unit

Featured Replies

Ok complicated post...

car 1 - 59 plate titanium with BT/VC system, dab head unit usb and line in. Bluetooth phone and audio

car 2 - 58 plate titanium with BT/VC, non- dab sony unit (mp3 logo) line in no usb. Bluetooth phone no audio

——-

car 1 was previously owned by me, it has the last update from Ford way back. Car 2 unknown history. We swapped the dab unit out and put it in the 58 plate but this hasn’t enabled Bluetooth audio a2dp.

my assumption is that a2dp is delivered via a firmware update to the (Nokia?) Bluetooth module via the head unit, so this is a non starter as the 58 plate doesn’t have usb.

next idea is to swap the Bluetooth module from the 59 plate to the 58 plate  same thing hopefully with a newer firmware.  The 59 plate doesn’t need the Bluetooth module as the head unit has been replaced anyway.

questions:

1) is this a stupid idea, is there a better one?

2) where is the Bluetooth module located?

3) worst case... can a dealer / dodgy bloke with IDS update the bluetooth module via obd?

Thanks!

It is actually very simple:

Car 1 has the Sound & Connect system (Bluetooth Voicecontrol with handsfree phone functionality, USB, Bluetooth Audio and Ipod/IPhone control).

Car 2 has the standard Bluetooth Voicecontrol system (Bluetooth Voicecontrol with handsfree phone functionality only).

If you want Bluetooth Audio in Car 2 you have to replace the Bluetooth Voicecontrol module for a Sound & Connect module (the type of module can be determined by the part number). In worst case scenario a 58 plate is produced before 04-2008. In this case the car will be based on the older 1st generation Bluetooth Voicecontrol system which has a different type of module and radio which are not compatible with Sound & Connect at all.

It sounded complicated when I was trying to type it up!

so the module should be interchangeable if the production date (which I’ll check on etis) is after that date.  Apologies I wasn’t aware there were different versions.

do you happen to know the physical location of the Bluetooth voice connect and sound and connect modules are on the vehicle?

thNks for the rundown!

The module is located behind/above the glove box. To get access to the module the glove box needs to be removed.

If the part number of the 58 plate module starts with 8M5T the car is based on the 2nd generation Bluetooth Voicecontrol system and compatible with Sound & Connect. If the part number starts with 7M5T the car is based on the older 1st generation system.

If the part number starts wit 8M5T you can swap the modules from both vehicles for testing.

That’s perfect. Seems like the car is too old for etis so I can’t confirm the production date at the moment but we think it’s December 2008 - so should be fine.  Will check the module numbers anyway to confirm.

Thanks jw - you’ve helped me with my mk3 in the past too - cheers.

Here's a guide to show what it looks like and how to remove if required

The unit starts with an 8 so should be swappable. Because the factory head unit is no longer in use, we could also swap the usb in the centre console.

would the loom already exist or need taking from the donor car too.  Any idea where it ends up?

thNks for the guide btw, it confirms we found the right module haha

Quick update to this just to close it all off... The donor car's Sound and Connect box was OK, we checked on the older focus and the build date seemed good.  The part number also matched.

Literally just disconnected and swap the boxes and immediately the BT Audio option was available and working.  Interestingly (or not), the 58 plate's original head unit worked despite us not knowing if it had had the update or not.  I was under the impression one of those old ford updates was for BT Audio but perhaps not.

Anyway, also swapped the head unit to the DAB version, £10 aerial off halfords and we're good.
