Camshaft Timing

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just looking for some info and advice as Ford Newport South Wales are no help what so ever.

I have a Ford Focus 1.0 Ecoboost and it started losing power and the oil light came on. It had plenty of oil in but topped it up just to be sure. It was like the car had gone into limp mode and there is a rattle from the engine.

RAC came out to me and gave me the following codes P0012 and P0014 which points to camshaft timing. I took it to one garage and they are saying I need a new engine, does anyone know if this is the case?

Any help or advice would be great :)

It's likely to be an oil pump fault, the light indicates low oil pressure, not low oil level.  Not uncommon on these as the pump gets clogged up.

You could have the oil pump cleaned or replaced and hope no engine damage was caused.  Or you could just drop another engine in.  It's hard to say if any damage was caused without physically looking but if it was driven with the light on for any length of time then it's probably too late for a minor repair now.

The DTC codes regarding the camshaft timing are caused by the lack of oil pressure. The camshaft actuators require sufficient oil pressure to work.

If the engine has run with the oil pressure light on (caused by insufficient oil pressure) for more than 1 minute there is a 99% chance that the engine is scrap.

A clogged oil pump on the 1.0 ECOboost is usually caused by incorrect engine oil. The usage of incorrect engine oil deteriorates the wetbelts and the rubber particles of the wetbelts will clogg the strainer of the oil pump.

Despite being very rare other known possible causes of insufficient oil pressure are a defective variable oil pump or a defective actuator that controls the oil output of the variable oil pump.

Thank you for your info.

It is currently in a garage waiting for them to strip the engine to see what they can do.

Hoping it is not a new engine as car is only 4 years old

Just measure the actual oil pressure using an external oil pressure gauge. If there is insufficient oil pressure or even no oil pressure at all and the engine produces a knocking sound the engine must be considered scrap.

In this case stripping down the engine is basically a waste of time and money. There are very few specialists that are capable to rebuild a 1.0 ECOboost properly. Especially since Ford does not supply any internal engine parts for the bottom end. In case of any damage the easiest/cheapest solution is to install a service engine (complete engine without any auxiliaries) or a used engine.
