MK3 ST Coolant flush - complete!

Featured Replies

Well, decided to perform a coolant flush on my mk3 ST as the colour started to look awful. God knows what had been put in there before I was the owner... either way, it’s so easy! Didn’t realise how easy it was to drain all the coolant and flush any crap out!

With having a marine fish tank, I’ve got a reverse osmosis machine that produces pure/distilled water with a reading of 0 TDS. (Pure water is needed for marine tanks in order to prevent any algae and cyanogen breakouts).

Drained all the coolant out and did 7 complete flushes with RO water until the colour coming out of the bottom of the radiator plug was clear.

Plug was an absolute mare to twist, had to use some dogs and get some leverage on the little plug lever! Best part is, if you have some spare hose pipe or anything thinner, tube wise, slots straight on to the outlet valve at the bottom of the radiator. No mess at all! Brilliant!

This is what came out:

And this is what it should have looked like and what I put back in, I was shocked!

Jeez did u have a quick 💩 in there while out shopping 😂 never seen it that brown always been red on both recent fords owned.

ECOboost engines run considerably hotter than the old naturally aspirated engines. The higher coolant temperature causes the coolant to deteriorate prematurely. As a result of this the coolant will discolorate and crystallize. In my opinion it is highly recommended to replace the coolant periodically on ECOboost engines during every major service (every 3 Years).

Be aware that the coolant system needs to be vacuum filled. Modern Ford engines do not have any possibilities to bleed the cooling system so vacuum filling is the only way to fill the system without introducing air pockets into the system. There are several examples of ECOboost engines that developed engine damage after the coolant system was not vacuum filled.

Also be aware that draining the coolant from the radiator only drains approximately 40 to 50% of the coolant (the systems contains approximately 10 litres of coolant in total) . The rest of the coolant remains in the bottom of the engine block and the heater core. When flushing with water several times the old coolant will be dilluted/replaced by water. To remove the water and obtain sufficient frost protection you either have to flush the cooling system with coolant several times or use a concentrated coolant that needs to be mixed with water (usually 50/50).

Wouldn't surprise me!  I've been on here 6 years and never once found out where Wilco gets all his knowledge from... :g:

Personally I believe he works as a spy for another manufacturer and hacks Fords technical servers.
