Ford focus 1.6tdci wont start !!!

Featured Replies

Hi this is first time I've done this so please help.

I've bought a Ford focus 1.6tdci 2009 that's had the wrong fuel added (petrol into diesel) I know it's bad but bear with me.

The previous owner told me it was his daughters first car. Been sat there during  lockdown was about to start back at work so took it out for a drive. He then tells me whilst driving  up motorway the  car started driving erratically, revving by its self. He managed to get it into lay by to stall it.

They called the AA who when plugged it in and told him there was an issue with turbo. He had it recovered to garage who the also diagnosed it to either being turbo or engine. As it now doesnt starter all.

That's when I relived him of the car to try and fix the car myself. First thing I checked was fuel and hey presto petrol in fuel line.

I've drained the tank replaced the filter flushed everything through. But to no avail.

It just wont start. Theres fuel, compression, and the glow plugs are working but nothing.

Has anybody got any ideas thanks martin.

Petrol will strip all the lubricating effect that diesel engines rely on.
I'd be looking for seized components and scored cylinders and damaged pistons / rings.
Also the fuel pump may be fried again due to loss of lubrication.
Tbh the engine may now be toast.

Hi thanks for reply I've got good compression and the pump is also working .o.k I know in the long run I'm going to get problems but in the mean time it should still start. There is nothing not even a murmur. Also if I spray easy start it fires up. ?????

How did they get petrol past the EasyFuel?

The HP pump is probably ruined tbh.  You'll need to check fuel pressure with live diags as a starting point.

As above check live pressure stats.
Ford diesels are a cow to start if there is even the smallest amount of air in the fuel system, bleed & prime the system just after the fuel filter, get a starter pack / battery booster and crank away until it gets going.

I can confirm that Ford Diesels are a total nightmare to get started. I learnt this when i ran out of fuel once. Loads of spray can stuff (easy start?) by the AA man got it going in the end. The car ran rough as hell for a few days but needed a good blast to clear any air & crud. I also put some injector cleaner in the fuel which actually helped to clear the issue.
