Windscreen Washer Not Working

Featured Replies

68 plate Fiesta ST-2. The windscreen washer pump can be heard working but there is no flow to the front or rear screen washers. I have disconnected the hose as it goes into the front nozzle and squirted some water back up it as I feared it may be airlocked after being run dry. This has made no difference.

Is there a filter anywhere that I can get at? The washer tank looks like it could be accessed by removing the front drivers side headlamp unit but it looks like you can't get that off without taking the whole front bumper off.

The filter on the pump is probably blocked, quite common on fiestas. You'll have to remove the drivers wheel and undo all the front side of the wheel arch lining and pull it back to get access to it. It's not the easiest thing to get to.

Glad I didn't waste too much time trying to get at it from above if the solution is to come in via the wheel arch! I'll get the wheel off and see what I can see.

@MasterTechTip I've removed the driver's wheel and removed the wheel arch lining. That let's me see the tank quite clearly and it looks like there's some darker coloured gunk in the bottom. The problem is that the pump and all the pipes seeem to be mounted forward of the tank so you can't get at them because the tank is in the way and it seems to be secured from the front. How do you proceed at this point?

So the pump isn't held in by anything other than a seal, keep wiggling it and it'll pop out. Be careful of all the water that'll come pouring out.

In the end of the pump you should see a load of snotty gunk, when it's been cleaned off you should just see lots of little holes.

If the black seal comes off on the pump (it will sit around it, it's quite big) then you will need to take this off and fit it bank into the washer bottle first before refitting the pump otherwise you'll never get it in properly.

Make sure when fitting the pump back in you press it in hard, when it's in all the way it should have very little movement.

Hope this is of some use!

I got the pump out and flushed the tank and cleaned the filter holes. It's now working fine. Thanks for the help 👍

No problem glad you got it sorted! 👍

Hi guys not sure if you will see this as you posted this a couple of years ago.

I seem to have the same problem, no water back and front, have a Fiesta Titanium 2020.

Followed the instructions but can’t see the pump, I can feel it round the front of the bottle, do I need to remove the pump blind, just disconnect the electric plug, the two water tubes and then pull the pump out.

It all feels quite solid, and I didn’t want to get too heavy handed with it and break something, so just put the lining and wheel back on and went for a cup of tea.

One thing that does look strange is the bottom half of the bottle looks empty but the top half looks full with the blue coloured screen wash, could there be an air lock.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi

I have a Fiesta 2018 plate and had the same problem, no screen wash back or front. I followed your advise and it’s working now. So thankyou, you saved me a lot of time and expences.

This worked for me and was a lot less fiddly than getting access to the pump etc.

  1. Remove the sound insulation on the bonnet (driver's side)
  2. Detach the feed tube where it meets the first T junction.
  3. Insert a football inflator into the tyre pump and insert the tapered end into the feed tube (facing the water bottle)
  4. Switch the tyre inflator on in short bursts to blow back the muck on the filter into the washer bottle.
  5. Disconnect the tyre inflator and blip the windscreen washer and hey presto there is water flowing again.
  6. Re-connect the feed tube to the T junction and secure the sound insulation.

Job done, although for completeness you could syphon out the washer bottle, contents crud and all and then refill.

Mixing different brands of screenwash can cause this, if they are not compatible to each other they can coagulate and create a gel.

@TechWise, perhaps this is too old of a thread now, but any advice on how you removed the pump? Appreciate a solid seal is needed, but I cannot for the life of me get the pump to shift...

Just going to pop this in here for anyone else returning to this thread in the future as an alternative method to removing the pump filter, as I struggled to remove it once getting to it.

Spent a couple of days consistently siphoning the tank and refilling with water from the hose. With each siphon more and more dirt was being drained, so continued repeating the process until the water was running clear. Popped a steradant tablet in over night for good measure just to hopefully kill off anything left behind, and today jets are firing on all cylinders!

I have completely emptied the tank now (siphoned the majority and let the jets do the rest) and will refill with some quality screenwash (perhaps Autoglym's), and hope they remain unclogged.

I'd recommend this method to anyone prior to trying to get to the pump, as it can be a right pain to remove.
